My wife gave me a TomTom GO 720 for my birthday last night. Since TomTom doesn't provide a manual for reference, I have been looking at forums like crazy to find answers to the many questions I have. There are a couple of questions I have that I haven't been able to find answers to, so I thought I would give it a shot here:

1. In the Home Software, everything seems to be Euro-centric. Prices are quoted in Euros, much of the updates available for purchase relate to Europe, etc. Do I have a seeting wrong somewhere, or is this just the way it is?

2. I purchased, downloaded and installed the map for the Southeastern US (I live in TN). What differences should I notice on my 720? It doesn't seem that I have any additional level of map detail or additional POI's.

3. Will map corrections that individuals have proposed automatically show up when I check for updates, or is that a different process?

4. Finally, does anyone have a .pdf of the 720 manual that supposedly existed on TomTom's website at one time?

Thanks,

Kevin.

1. nothing wrong. tomtom being a netherland company is still in the process of converting to the US currency I guess.

2. No Difference. Having a 720 with the latest NA map you do not need anything else. You wasted your money for nothing but anyways Americans can afford to do that while the rest of the world starve to death.

3. No it wont, but it depends how you set the preferences in your HOME account. If set to accept changes reported by many then you will receive it sooner , if set only changes verified by tomtom then it gets longer to verify.

4. Use your HOME app and then click on User Manual but instead of being so nationalistic then pretend you are from UK and select English UK . I hope you understand their written english, lol lol lol lol.

Kevin I hope all this helps you someway.

Kevin, don't buy any of the home services. Weather you should be able to activate right away if you have an internet plan on your phone and the 720 can use it. If you can't get traffic to work (also need working internet through your phone) open a ticket with tomtom or call them - this service is also (currently) free in the US. Get weather working first so you know the internet/pairing to your phone works before trying to get traffic working.

Thanks for the responses

I appreciate the info.

Trafficinfo, I expect all companies to cater to us Americans. Why, just the other day, while the wife and I were buring $100 bills just for the fun of it, I asked her why in the world a company such as TomTom would expect me to appreciate seeing items for purchase denominated in Euros. Euros? Who uses those?

I do find it a little disingenious of TomTom to not include any documentation to explain to you what you have when you own one of their products, and then offer for sale items you don't need without explaining which of their models need what. When I read that the 720 came with "base" maps of the U.S. and Canada, I assumed that the regional maps they sold were more detailed.

I really appreciate the info on the different versions of the manual. I will probably be able to understand the U.K. version, if I can get it into Word and do a search and replace for all the s's with z's.

lol lol lol. kwfergy your 4 questions are among the answers as to why I am now an almost 2 years happy and satisfied Garmin StreetPilot c550 owner. By the way I wish I even had $1 bills to bury not to mention a wife for tonight ......... Man, this everyday cooking is killing me!!! lol lol lol lol lol.

Now seriously the Tomtom 720 is a fine unit but I prefer the accuracy of the Navteq Maps and POI's that GArmin units have. After all a GPS is only that, a GPS, not a picture viewer or an mp3 player.

kwfergy, you should contact TomTom customer service to see about getting a refund for that South-Eastern map you purchased. You were obviously misled and they have just sold you a duplicate of what you already have.

Good luck.
