Hi,

I just received my 1st GPS, the TT Go 720. Do I need to update anything from my Intel iMac or can I just use right out of the box?

I would appreciate any help.

Thanks,

Bob

You can use it right out of the box, but be aware that the firmware and maps might not be quite up to date. Things like tweaks to roads and additions of "Points of Interest" are constantly being updated. Whether this impacts your use of the unit would depend primarily upon whether any of the updated map information happens to coincide with your trips.

If you are running Boot Camp or similar and have access to Windows on your iMac, you will probably find that the functionality of the TomTom Home program (used to update your 720) will be greater in the Windows version. If not, if you have access to another Windows based machine somewhere, I think you'll find that helpful.

You'll need to go to the TomTom website and download the Mac version of the HOME software (version 1.6 I think). Through this you'll be able to download updates for your TomTom and do most of what you will need to do (backing up your Tom Tom should be the FIRST thing you do when you plug it into your computer), but you WILL NOT be able to use the "Latest Map Guarantee" or use the software to control your TomTom while its plugged in on a Mac as of right now. Hopefully a software update will solve this problem. But for now you will need a PC or to run Windows under BootCamp in order to install the most recent version of the HOME software (2.1) in order to get your 30-day free map update.

You can call TT and talk to them about the maps guarantee.. Set up your TT on your iMac and create your on-line TT account first. I managed to convince them to extend my map guarantee for the current latest version (710) until 1 Feb 2009 vice 30 days.

Or, if you have one handy, you can use a PC and use TTH 2.1.

BACKUP up the data on the out-of-the-box unit to your computer HARD DRIVE. Then start messing around with it. Use whatever Mac has that allows you to copy hidden/system/etc files - some are hidden under Windows, at least.

Thanks for all of your help.

I may just use my work laptop which is windows based.

I'm in the same situation with my first GPS (TT 720); I also have a work laptop that runs Windows, and my home machine is a Mac. I've connected OK with the Mac, but to run the latest software I decided to do all updates and backups on the laptop. I've had no issues.

There's also some Windows-only software (Tyre) that is just way too cool for what I want to do, like lay out itineraries with lots of waypoints for motorcycle rides.

Unfortunately I won't actually get out to DO any of the rides until the weather improves a bit :( , but it's fun to dream them up...
