Newbie, pc traffic updates v accessory device

Hi
I'm new to forums and new to TomTom/GPS, I have an XXL Europe - gift for Christmas.
I have not signed up for any extra services but note there is an accessory which picks up traffic problems ahead does this function on its own or do you need to have the subscription update as well?
Hoping someone can help.

If you mean this one:

then no subscription is necessary after paying the initial price. This traffic info is rds-tmc which is not as current or accurate as those models with LIVE traffic functionality but certainly better than nothing.

And, if by chance you purchase maps for North America and use your unit in North America, the combo car charger/traffic antenna works on this side of the pond as well,
