Hi all. Got my wife the gps for christmas..all was going well, got HOME downloaded and running fine.Downloaded my latest map, took awhile to load but was successful. We turned on the unit and after loading the unit read no map. Loaded HOMe back up and i find out the the map i just downloaded and installed need to be activated..I didnt see anything about how to activate it so i deleted the map off my device and am now trying to install my old map back on and it is SLOW, Like and hour slow, this can't be right and i cant stop it in the middle of the load, made that mistake once. You hit the cancel button and it didnt remove the files that were already writen and left my internal memory half full with now way to remove it..had to download the flash utillity and get it off the way.now Im trying to load my perivious map for over and hour now and its still not done..Any one out there have simmilar issues

Did you read the announcement at the top of the forum you logged into? If not, please do so now, especially step 1.

No i didnt make an Explorer back-up. I wouldnt have any problems here if the FREE map didnt need to be activated in some fashion.

When you look at the contents of your unit using Explorer, do you see a map folder? And, if so, within that folder do you see a bunch of files, including one with an extension of .meta.dct? If so, try a reset on your unit (holding the power button for aqbout 10 seconds) See if that helps.

Also the downloaded map update should be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\My Documents\TomTom\HOME\Downloads\complete\maps\

Do you see a .cab file there?

Ok i finally got he map installed after downloading the application thing..Not sure why it take 6 + hours to transfer less than on meg to the unit, but i let it go and finally have it up and running again..Installed one voive for now and the quickgps fix update and now the unit reads aquireing valid sat signal..does the unit really take so long even with the quick gps patch thing? I really not to impressed with this thing at the moment..The simgle reason i baught this over the garmin is for the latest map thign and it was nothign but a pain..Im guessign it is a software issue with HOMe and vista??

Reset your device by pressing and holding the power on/ off button until the device restarts with a drum roll, then take it outside to locate the signal, whilst modern GPS devices will work indoors they are best tried either outside or in the car where they are intended to be used, once its got a position fix subsequent time to first fix will be less.
As an aside I haven't bothered using qGPS for some 2+ years as I have found it can make matters worse than regular use of the device - Mike

I will have to try the reset as stated..We have been useing it in the car..my wife has taken it 2 times now to work and back and its about 15-20 mins each way with no luck on the signal..I was looking through the files i took off the internal memory, the stupid install home file thats annoying as hell everytime you coonect it asking when i have it already,,,but i see i took offf a file called navcore.cab im geussing i need to put that back on?

The gps signal is best captured when the unit is in a clear location and STATIONARY.

On your unit, do you see a folder called ephem (use Explorer). If so, delete everything in it. Now, on your computer, do you see a folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\My Documents\TomTom\HOME\Downloads\complete\ephemeris ?

If so, delete any sub folders in it.

Now, connect to Home and see if a quickgpsfix file is offered.

There should NOT have been a navcore.cab file on the unit. Don't try to put one there.

OK I did as you suggested and the unit has been out in the drive way for more than an hour now and still reads poor gps reception..been reading on tomtom site and it says that it shouldnt take more than 5 mins with the latest application installed and with quick gps fix but still not working im at a loss here..

Finally i got it working, I decided to check the files that were on my unit verses the files in the navcore.cab file that was in the application folder on my pc..when i opened that file with winrar i noticed lots of the same files that were on my pc except 2 folders one named sbin and one named bin i extracted both those files to my unit safly removed it from the pc, soft reset and the but it on my back window and within 1min 30 secs i had gps up and running..Hurray!

Good news! So, in your case, it wasn't just the .dct file the install failed to copy over.

Now, make that Explorer backup.........:p

Ok so its working and has good signal, but the wife took it to work today and said it was shutting down muiltiple times on the way to work today,,then would start back up on its own..maybe the unit only needs one of the bin files and i should experiment with which one..yesturday it stayed on with no signal....man i hate software issues...damn computers lol

Maybe, just maybe, the symptoms you are describing are caused by a combination of two things: 1) a battery preference setting of shutting down when external power is lost and 2) an auto charger either not fully connected to the usb port or not fully inserted in the cigarette outlet.

Playing with mismatched contents of cab files is asking for trouble.

I recommend a full app cleanout so that things work properly.

1) backup your present (working) Tomtom per this link again
2) delete everything on the Tomtom except for the USA_and_Canada folder
3) run "Update my XL" in HOME and have home reinstall everything fresh

ok im goin to do as Mvl suggested but my wife pointed out to me that the unit has issues when she puts in a route to navigate too..after inputing the desdination it has an issue calculating the distance and time and stuff and resarts
