TomTom Model(s)
XL 340-S
I just put in an order for a XL-340S in on amazon.com after a ridiculous amount of research. I'm looking forward to it since this is my first GPS. :D

Now does anyone have POI files for Winder and Athens (GA)? I want to go ahead and figure out how they're installed before my GPS gets here.

Welcome to TTF.

When you do get your unit, the first thing to do is make an Explorer, not Home, backup of the unit's contents. If not sure how, see here.

Then connect your unit to Home (the TomTom software) and see if an updated firmware application for the unit is offered. If so, download and install it.

Then go to Home's Tools-->Latest Map Guarantee and you should be offered an updated map (840). Download and install it. (It will take well over an hour or so for the download and installation since your model is only usb 1.1 compliant, not usb 2)

Then make another Explorer backup to a different folder.

Thr map comes with millions of pois included. You will find out what is available for those locations when you try to Navigate to-->POI-->In city and you select the state of Georgia, the city of Athens and then the category you wish.

You can, over time, find other custom poi categories on internet sites. These will be downloaded as xxx.ov2 files. You simply copy these files into the specific map folder (USA_Canada, for example). The file may also contain an associated .bmp file for the icon; if so, just copy this file into the map folder as well.

Do you know how well this will work on Linux? It's my understanding that it's mounted as a mass storage device in Windows, so I'm guessing it works the same.

Welcome to the forum. Be sure to make that back up according to dhn's post. I am sure you will get an answer to your follow up question shortly.

Yay, it's here already.

Boo, USB 1.1

1.8 GB at 1.5 Mbits per second is no fun. :(

edit: and as long as updates come in a format that can be copied over normally rather than in some proprietary blob, it should be ok on Linux.

The updates and everything went fine. I tried it out on a routine trip to the store, got there, turned it off and stowed it in the dashboard.

When I turned it back on, it had already calculated a route back home. I know that should be an obvious feature, but I was surprised to see it on a mid-range GPS.
