Hi,

I am about to become the proud owner of Tomtom Go 630 which just beat out the Garmin 265WT primarily because of Tomtoms additional features (IQ Routes, MapShare and advanced lane guidance -which I hope will function per expectations!) According to Forum reports/ user comments the Garmin 265WT appears to have some audio problems and the lifetime traffic reporting system feature appears to have "spotty" coverage but the 265WT is still a "best pick" on GPSReview.net (along with the Tomtom 740 live).

I have owned a hand-held GPS Magellan GPS 315 / Fugawi Mapping Software for many years used primarily for telecoms site survey work.

I guess I am asking Tomtom Forum Members to kindly confirm my choice based upon the above criteria or have I missed some thing or other before I shell out C$250 at Best Buy?

Thanks for your help!

Ron

Welcome to TTF.

I'll hit you with the bad news right off.....

ALG is rarely implemented for Canadian roads, even with the latest map 835. I do have a thread elsewhere showing screenshots of just 4 locations in the Maritimes where they have been seen. NONE in the GTA!!

One can only hope there are additional sites when the 840 map is released in November. But no guarantees.

OTOH, there IS IQ2 routing on the 630 latest map and application. Garmins don't have that feature as of yet....

Yes, TomToms do have mapshares.........and as long as you are totally aware of the functionalitiy of that feature .... and the limitations ....(you can't report a geographical change like a new road and hope to see it implemented on your map) ........then ok.

thanks for the info DHN -absence of ALG in Canada is disappointing I presume ALG is widely available in the US?
I have noted some of the comments re: map accuracy in Canada and slow updating with MapShare- it is IMHO still however a significant feature/ resource with multiple user input on map error correction that Garmin does not appear to have as yet. Can tabled user corrections be applied directly by the Tomtom Owner to current map version and downloaded future releases which continue omit the updated map info?

I understand that planned routes with several waypoints may be saved with the Tomtom a feature which is not available with Garmin -is this so? - or doesn't this apply to Canada either!

Thanks1

Ron

You can send in map corrections and hope they'll be included in future maps. Some get in, some don't make it over several map issues. That's the reality of mapshare.....somewhat less than TomTom's marketing hype.

Better than nothing? Maybe.

As to itinerary planning. Yes, it works on that model and in Canada too. But many models of Garmin have 'route planning', which is essentially the same thing ... only better in that itinerary planning allows for 48 waypoints while route planning lets you do 75, as I remember.

Garmin 265WT

Upon review of all the options I have changed my mind and now going for the Garmin 265WT very close call! thanks for your help and good luck with your TT's!
