Hello,

I have ordered a TT1 3rd Gen. It is en route and I was wondering if anyone out there can tell me what I should do after I open the box. Should I be doing updates or registering somewhere or whats the deal?

Any help would be thanked upon.

Thanks,

Shandley

Before you even install TomTom Home software, connect your unit to the computer and make a full backup of the contents using Explorer to a folder on your computer for safe keeping ... just in case.

Perfect & thank you!

After the backup, I should install the software? I'm sure it will tell me what I should do next but I really don't want to run into any snags when I do it. I like to learn as much about it as possible before getting it in hand.

Yeah, run the install for software. If you are offered a software update, take it. Also you should have 30 days via map guarantee to get the current map for your unit.

I second the advice regarding a full backup using Windows Explorer. It will be just under 1 GB. Your unit will show up in Windows Explorer as an external hard drive and you can easily 'see' the contents. Just copy them over to your computer.

I believe that the cd will contain a copy of the 'Home' program. This program is necessary for connecting with TomTom and getting updates, purchasing new maps, etc. Install this and let it update itself to a newer version if it needs to. By connecting your unit, it should be recognized and will search for any appropriate updates for your unit.

Realize that the cd contains very little. The only copy of your map is on the unit. This is why a manual backup is advised. 'Home' does backups too, but if you read the forum, you will see many complaints about the backup messing up. Maps are expensive to replace! (The operating software, however, is free to replace.)

Thats good to know, thank you.

Being new I have a few follow up questions. I have 30 days to get the map I need, this is good news. What I want to know is what happens in a year from now when that new overpass is built and they put in that new bridge, etc etc? How much would it cost to get the newest map after the 30 days?

Also, I don't suppose there is a way to share maps with others (without a fee).

Just as a possible heads up...

You may not get a CD with your 3rd edition. I didn't. In the instructions that came with my unit, they provided a link to download the latest TomTom 'Home' to your computer. After installing 'Home', (and rebooting), when you connect your TomTom 3rd ed., 'Home' will automatically launch and check to see if you need any updates. About 2 to 3 times a week, there is at least GPSfix (very tiny file) that they offer for download. This file helps your TomTom locate the satellites more quickly.

As far as new maps go after the 30 day free update, it looks like they're right about $100. That's a bit pricey in my book. There will have to be some known improvements before I'll buy a new map.

Hope this helps.

Agreed.

Thank you for the heads up.

Is there some sort of underground map sharing that I may or may not want to know about?

If it exists, do NOT expect any feedback on the issue in this forum. Hacking/sharing of maps is 100% ILLEGAL.
