New Firmware Issues

From reading the forums there seems to be a problem with the new 8.3 version of the firmware. My device, bought today, is at 7.221 firmware and 710.1584 maps. Considering the 30 day upgrade situation what is the best course of action. Seems as though some have said to rollback to 8.1 which is not an automatic option for me.

Also, what is the best advice for additional memory via the SD card slot - minimum size, speed of card, etc.

Thanks in advance for advice.

First, make a complete backup of your unit's contents using Explorer, not Home. Ensure hidden files/folders are showing.

For additional storage and to make life easier when it comes time to upgrade your map, I'd get a 4-gig sdhc card and use its storage capacity in conjunction with the internal.

Now then, for various reasons, I'd hold off upgrading your firmware and map for now. Perhaps there will be a firmware fix within the window you have for your lmg. If not forthcoming after 3 weeks, then you'd better update your firmware then.

Do NOT upgrade your map for the 3 weeks. First, you need v8 firmware to get version 8 maps. And there may be other reasons, too. Just keep one eye on the calendar and the other on this forum for any new information.

Will high capacity SD's work? I could not get an 8gbHC to work.
The units will read an 8GB card fine at firmware levels LESS than 8.300, but will not write to them. At firmware version 8.300, the TT will both read and write successfully to the full size of the card. It's one of the FEW endearing aspects of the 8.300 firmware.

If you backup your existing tomtom with explorer, it will archive both your firmware and map.

Then you could update firmware to 8.3, and then use the latest map guarantee to get your free version 815 map.

Then you could back up your 8.3 / 815 and recopy your 7xx app and map back from explorer.

If you do all this you get:
1) A free 815 map, which you could use later once tomtom makes a stabilized 8.xx app version.
2) the 8.3 app's SDHC reading/writing ability is permanently written into the firmware and never goes away. So with upgrade to 8xx / downgrade to 7xx, you should be able to use all SDHC cards on the 7xx app.

Thanks -

I was just about to ask this question :) You must have read my mind.. Come to think of it, my significant other does this all the time.

Tomtom sale must be going down badly because GO720 on sale now still loaded with v7.10 map and NC 7.221 :D

TomTom probably stopped making them when the x30's came out, so the pipeline is still full of them.

Even "Best Buy" (read worst buy as to prices normally) had the 720 for about $170 last week.

Given that, with a system and map upgrade, they are essentially x30's - still are very good buy.

Question: Has it been confirmed if I copy with Windows Explorer the
complete contents of the internal drive of a TomTom 720 it will
copy the firmware also?

Is it possible to run strickly off an external SD card. Cards are cheap.
I could have one for different firmware and maps, and include Tomplayer
to run all off of external SD card.

Someone should write a book of "Hacking the TomTom" or something
like that letting you know all that can be done. Mods, tricks ... etc.

If you have hidden files/folders showing, then for sure Explorer will copy **everything** from the unit --- loose files and folders.

There are those who have one formware version on a sdhc card and map and a different firmware version and different map on internal.

TT is such that if it detects the application on a sdhc card installed, it will indeed boot to the card first.
