phew i thought someone would know the answer to this. i guess its not worth the risk trying it anyway

Yes - Provided

The 1450 mAh will work provided it is the same voltage and has the same case as the 1350 mAh. It will simply last longer between charges.

Will it work? It's a crap shoot! Are you feeling lucky?

You can be pretty sure that TomTom has designed the battery and battery charging circuit to accommodate some very conservative specs.

When you perform out-of-spec charging of low-power, hand held devices like a GPS unit, a cell, an MP3 player, etc, there is a real risk that added heat buildup may cause damage to tiny, battery-adjacent components. For the same reason that you don't leave your TT to bake on the dash of your car on a hot summer day, you really don't want to impose thermal trauma by forcing a potentially longer or hotter charging cycle.

I'm absolutely sure that TomTom has never publicly divulged their component design tolerances...other than those details that were required to get electrical/safety certification for the markets they are sold in. Therefore, any encouragement you get to perform the deviation that you are considering, is likely to be little more than a guess. If you're not a TomTom electrical engineer, how can you know what will and will not work? Personally, I don't think I would be interested in pushing that particular envelope. For such a marginal milliamp-hour increase, a little peace-of-mind is worth far more to me. I'd go with the battery that was designed specifically for my device.

If new battery needed, then let's crap-shoot?

Wiley

If the unit genuinely needs a new battery, ie. the original one has died, then is there any harm in trying a different battery?

An OEM li-ion battery with the same physical and electrical properties is a whole lot less troubling than a higher mAH battery. In the microelectronics business, you virtually never get something for nothing. A larger capacity battery very well may require longer recharge cycles, which over time could mortally wound or kill your unit's charging circuitry and/or neighboring components.

Ya gotta ask yourself if you're willing to risk destroying your otherwise working unit, on the chance that you might get a little more battery charge? If you can get a 1:1 replacement for the existing battery...you're pretty much assured that you will not cause yourself any disappointment.

I hope you keep us updated as you look for a solution. Sooner or later, we're all going to have to deal with an aging battery. If you discover a cost-effective repair/replacement path, be sure to let us know.

Good luck with your quest.

fantastic answer mate.
my battery is dead and i do need a new one. i have been on ebay, but the 1350 mAh looks a bit strange.(not the same shape), i doesnt look as if it will fit my tomtom.
the 1450 mAh does look as if it its and this is why i was asking the question.

you have been very helpful and i will return with an answer after i get it fitted:)

thanks again

soapy

the difference in charging a 1350 vs a 1450 would be almost unnoticable IMHO as would be the difference in the operating time...probably less than ten minutes more on a charge....(too lazy to do the math)

If the 1450 will fit and the voltage is the same, I doubt there'd be any problem in using it....

got it

got the new battery and replaced it. turns out i had to swap some of the wires. no big deal but it works fine

thanks for all the help guys;)
