Multiple Street Names during alerts

Hello all, I am new to the forum (first post)

I recently got a TomTom XL-S after having used Navigator 5 for a Palm Tungsten T5 for a couple of years. When I am approaching a turn the voice prompt says "In one-half mile turn left" without saying the street name. As I approach the turn the next prompt says, "turn left Highway three hundred and seventeen, highway three seventeen" Why does it say the street name twice (not all of the time but nearly all) and is there anything I can do to make it only say the name of the street once? Also, it would be more helpful if the first prompt would say the name of the street so I could be on the lookout for the street sign instead of waiting to the last second at the prompt closest to the turn. Is there anything I can do about this?
Thanks

When I updated my maps and application a week ago (on my 130S) I started to have the problem where it won't speak the street name until I turn. Support told me to do the following:

1) Remove the application (using Home)
2) Reset the unit
3) Install the application
4) Reset the unit

This seemed to bring back my early turn warning prompts

Thanks for responding. I tried what you said, but it didn't help, I am still getting the first prompt without the street name and the second prompt with the street name. I can tap the lower left corner at any time and get the prompt with the street name but it doesn't do it automatically. Maybe that is the way it is supposed to work?

You ARE using a computer voice, aren't you?

Yes, I am using male computer "Dave" for the English/US.
1st prompt (1/2 mile or so) = no street name
2nd prompt (near the turn) = street name read twice if it is a highway # like "route three hundred seventeen route three seventeen" or "highway three hundred forty-three highway three forty three"
2nd prompt = street name read once if it is a name instead of a number like "elm street"
2nd prompt = frequently, there is no 2nd prompt near the turn.

Under Voice preferences, what options do you have checked? (there are 2 screens of options, I believe).

I unchecked "Read aloud road numbers" and that solved the double reading of road numbers.

1st screen:
Read aloud street names (checked)
Read foreign street names out loud (checked)
Read aloud road numbers (unchecked)
Read aloud traffic warnings (unchecked)
Read aloud weather information (unchecked)
Read aloud POI warnings (checked)

2nd screen:
Read aloud warnings (checked)
Read aloud tips (unchecked)
Read aloud tutorials (unchecked)
Disable early warning instructions (unchecked)
Disable 'keep to highway lane' instructions (unchecked)
Read aloud signposts (checked)

But still no street name or number at the first prompt, only at the one near the turn (sometimes no 2nd prompt at all)

Well, I use the computer voice 'Susan' and she, too, sometimes misses the street name when telling me to turn. You may want to (temporarily, at least) switch to her and see if there is an improvement in your experience.

I switched to Susan with no discernible difference (other than a somewhat more pleasant voice :) )

The warning without the street name is the early warning. You get it about 1 mile or 1 minute from the next change of direction. TOMTOM has set it up so that it DOES NOT say the street name. It just says "Right turn ahead", without letting you know that the turn is at least 1 minute away! If you don't know about this, it can be really confusing. Enough people complained about it, and TomTom gave the option to turn if off:

"Disable early warning instructions (checked)

I would rather that they changed it to say "Prepare for right turn". But they didn't ask me. :-(

I like it the way it is - I've got my screen set up to show me what my next turn is as well as how far away it is (ie. "800 yards") and the street name, so the voice prompt without the street name is fine.

YMMV, I guess! :)

My "Right Turn Ahead" warning DOES speak the street name... "Right Turn Ahead, W Speedway Boulevard"

Even if I leave "Disable early warning instructions' (unchecked or unchecked) it still will not give me the street name at the early warning.

I like the early warning, I just wish it said the name of the street so the driver could be on the look out for the street sign.

I contacted TomTom support (such as it is) with this question but they haven't gotten back to me, yet.

..much deletion...

Thanks

This is one aspect I enjoy from my TT: not having to find and read road signs. On the TT screen, you see the turn arrow, distance and street name. At night or in the fog it can be a challenge to find and read those street signs, I rely on the TT to know exactly where I am and where I need to turn. I'm sure you will come to love it once you get used to quickly see the info on screen. It takes a little while to get used to all the info shown but you'll soon get the hang of it.

TomTom responded in an email with this answer:

Thank you for taking the time to contact TomTom Customer Support regarding the unit saying the street name when you are close to the turn, and not when it originally tells you that there is a turn coming up. My name is Harvey and it is my goal to provide you with an exceptional customer experience. We are always happy to help.

We would like to inform you that there is not adjusting this. The unit will say the street name just a little before you reach the turn. We do use customers feedback to decide what updates or feature should be added to the units. With a future update this may be something that is changed. You can check our website regularly to stay informed on upcoming changes. One of the best ways to stay informed of updates and units that will be released, is through our news letter.

So, I guess it will only say the name of the street at the prompt closest to the turn.:(

Thanks for all of your replies.:D

Well, I have some news to report. I was NOT getting the street name on the advance warning (e.g., "right turn ahead") Well, I updated my US and Canada maps to v 7.20, and lo and behold the advance warning is now giving the street name! (e.g., "right turn ahead, oak street"). I did not get an app update, so I'm guessing one of the system files was replaced along with the map.

I still have the problem where the turn announcement is coming almost too late to make the turn, but oh well.

If you look at the lower left corner of your screen, the distance to the turn is well indicated. I now rely on this info as often the street sign is hard to find or read. I consider it as one of the most usefull indication and it also indicates the direction to turn so you can't make a mistake...
