I thought that it might be helpful if I share my experiences when trying to watch videos on my TomTom. I went through many failed attempts before hitting upon the perfect (at least for me) solution:
TomPlayer. It's a wonderful
MiniGUI wrap for
MPlayer that is free and works just fine, playing mp3's, ogg's, mpeg's & avi's (got to be the right codec). When you're done with TomPlayer, TomTom needs to reboot, which takes a while.
First, I tried the mplayer/miniGui combination that can be found at
TomTomHeaven (which is actually at the bottom of TomPlayer.) But this didn't work for me at all: the video stopped playing after a few seconds, the on-screen controls didn't work, and when the video is finished, TomTom gets rebooted without furher ado. Not very userfriendly. (I was using "Mplayer 1.0 + GUI 1.2" -- perhaps I should've tried the other versions...)
I had been wondering about the fact that my TomTom came with an mplayer in /mnt/sdcard/bin and with a mysterious file demoplayer.sh. On a
German TomTom forum I found an explanation on how to use it that I haven't seen anywhere else, so I guess, it bears repeating here:
If your TomTom
came with these two files: /mnt/sdcard/bin/mplayer, /mnt/sdcard/bin/demoplayer.sh,
then you may also have a folder /mnt/sdcard/demo. In my case the folder was there, but it was empty. If you've already got a file demovideo.avi in there, fine, else, you've got to use your own, copy it in the demo folder and rename it. (I tried uploading one that works in a zip, but the upload always fails. So you may have to experiment a little.
Now comes the fun part:
- click on the status bar
- click on "Version Info"
- double-click on the time
...and your video should start playing. To stop it, click on the video, then double-click on the time again. (If you don't, it's still running in the background, I think.) Mind you: there aren't any controls at all.
I spent endless hours trying to figure out demoplayer.sh (which contains a few nonsensical lines), trying to create an .sh-file that could be invoked from the menu. The best I could do: I managed to get the video playing, but without any sound...
Well, TomPlayer to the rescue. My thanks to Patrick Bruy?re.
