I've been entering corrections like mad, I have the settings set up to download even the corrections provided by a few members, and instead of being flooded with them daily I've gotten nothing for weeks.

I've seen people complain on other threads about the lack of updates recently, but on one of them I read that they're model-specific, e.g. only corrections submitted by 920 users will be received on 920 platforms.

I've already tried erasing and re-downloading the updates. According TT Home there's simply nothing more to download.

Has anyone else been receiving updates? Has anyone else been submitting map/POI corrections?

Possible connection: The updates stopped about the same time I subscribed to the fuel price service.

Mapshares aren't just model specific but map specific so that mapshares for a 710 don't apply to a 715 and vice-versa.

Try the Home option of removing mapshare changes by others and trying to update again. It worked for me yesterday when, after a week of no mapshare dl's, I got one and the changes applied went from 2941 to over 16000.

Actually, I think Mapshare is model independent but certainly map dependent!

By that I mean, build number counts! Thus, 710.1561 and 710.1576 are not mixed. It pays to have the map with the widest distribution, as this gets you the most updates.

Point well taken. Thanks for the clarification.

If that is true, then the number of map corrections available may be misleading. Any map corrections in an earlier version that have been verified by the TomTom staff, you would think, would be included in a later version and hence would not show up as a correction. In other words, you would expect the later map versions to have fewer corrections because corrections from previous versions are already included.

The flaw in that logic is assuming mapshares for an earlier version are getting incorporated in a later map. Not always true, it seems.

As far as MapShare corrections are comcerned, we have no idea what percentage level those updates are at. Have they done 50% of highly reported corrections and have a backlog of 90% of total corrections to do? Is the backlog going down or is it going up and they need additional resources and waiting for additional budget allocation which won't come before June? Very few people if any know if their corrections are yet implemented in other people's systems. Map Share updates have been suspended since Easter weekend. Will they discover the whole update process needs to be restarted from scratch due to some misunderstood procedure implementation in Home? Let me say my confidence level is not vey high as far as Home is concerned...

Hi Gilbert !

Am also from Montreal.

I have a GO920T, and would like to ask you this.

Is your Tomtom accurate for guiding you at the door of an entered address ?

Does it make you turn right most the times ?

In fastest route, do you find that it takes longest route instead ?
Yesterday, I had to go to Sherbrooke, QC. Normally I would take the eastern townships highway to get there. But with tomtom, at a certain point before arriving in Sherbrooke, it made be get off the highway to take Blvd, Bourque to get downtown...! This road is full of lights and local traffic, and it takes much longer. Could someone explain to me the logic of this ....let's stay polite here, unit?

And it's like that for many other locations. Is it because at the end of the highway I would had to make a left turn ? and it decided to make me get off on my right again. This GPS makes me do big detour just so I arrive by right turns 90% of the time .

I had a Go910 before, and the unit was very accurate. But my car as been stolen, and off course the GPS was in the car...
Now since the 910, they change their mapping and software, and it's not the same accuracy anymore.

I am in communication with Tomtom basically 2 times a week. They are very polite and ready to help. But since I bought my GPS in November, we still trying to make it work decently, and so far it not. What can we really expect from Tomtom for us in Canada. Are we again not important for them because we are a smaller market ?

I spend $699.00 on this GO920T first week it came out, and I find my old Pioneer Avic S1 to be more accurate. It doesn't have any of Tomtom gadgets, but what I really want is a GPS that gets me were I need to go, and the fastest way, and accurately each time.

We do to much off R&D for them, and after, they will sell us the upgrades and software changes.

Does it look like am frustrated ?

This is a bit off topic, but I'll answer to the best of my ability.

The 920T does have some quirks. For example, it often assumes a divided road and has you go around the block so that you can make a right turn into your destination. Then it gets confused when you make a left turn instead.

Like most GPS's I've noted that the GO 920 assumes addresses are split up evenly along a block (not always the case). In dense city areas that still means you get close to where you want to go, but in more rural areas I could see how that could be a problem (addresses are then split up evenly across miles perhaps). So far, every address I've entered has gotten me pretty close to where I want to go.

Also like most units, the 920T assumes freeways will be the fastest, followed by expressways, followed by major roads, with local roads trailing far behind. It uses that ranking to determine the best guess route.

The Route IQ feature introduced into the 930 is supposed to help it make smarter decisions.

Why do other units perform better? They have different algorithms and different assumptions. Like any computer algorithm that is supposed to deal with the real world, those assumptions are sometimes not optimal for certain situations. What does that mean for the 920? It means that there's something about your geography that the writers of the software didn't consider.

On the bright side, I've noticed that ever since I downgraded my firmware to 7.221, the software has been much smarter about remembering slow expressways and suggesting I try other routes. If you're using the latest 7.481 firmware, consider trying 7.221 and see if the navigation gets better over time.

Thank you for your time.

How can you go back to firmware 7.221 ?

Is it available thru Tomtom ?

George

I just downloaded nearly 3000 MapShare updates. :) No idea what they were, but I'm assuming updates are good, make TomTom grow up big and strong!
