Before doing anything else on your TomTom using Explorer, I would recommend doing a backup using Explorer. View the drive that is the internal memory on your device, click on the edit pull-down menu and select copy. Then view some empty folder on your PC or network (but not anywhere on your TomTom or its memory card), and click on the edit pull-down menu and click paste.
If you have multiple maps on your TomTom, I would also make some map other map (other than the one you're planning on moving) the current map. This should make sure that the "current" map doesn't appear to be "missing" when your device restarts. I don't really know if this is necessary (or even helps) at all, but it seems like a good idea.
Also, if at all possible, I would recommend having the memory card NOT in the TomTom when moving the maps. Maybe my experience was unusual, but I did have a problem copying a map from the internal memory to the memory card once, while the memory card was in the TomTom.
All you should need to do is move the map folder and its contents to the memory card. There are no configuration files to change. In Windows Explorer, view the drive that is the internal memory on your TomTom, right click on the map folder (i.e. "North_America") and select cut from the context menu. Now view the root folder of your memory card, click on the edit pull-down menu, and click paste.
You can now restart your device. When you go through your device's menus to switch maps, the moved map should appear just as it always did.
