maps and performance

Hi everyone

I have just bought a tom tom XL2 and have a couple of questions.

Firstly, I can't seem to upload the new map (I think it's a free latest map guarantee) as it says it's too big. It's a western european map. I tried deleting the current map but couldn't get it back and ended up having to get the device exchanged for a new one.

Secondly, I have decided not to pay for map updates as I don't do that much driving and I don't think the roads change enough for it to be a necessity. I am wondering though, if I don't buy the Tom Tom official map updates will the performance of the device suffer from a less effective service? As in Tom Tom might not support the old maps anymore therefore it will not be able to analyse roads as effectively for the IQ technology? Does anything like that happen or can I keep the preloaded ones as long as I like?

I used to have a Garmin, I have had two Garmins which I liked very much but am new to tom tom. I never updated garmin maps either and I found that after 2-3 years they didn't seem to work so well so does it matter if you don't update sat nav maps?

any thoughts or comments appreciated. It will help me make a decision whether to stick with this product or go back to garmin

regards
