Map Zoom / Detail Level changes

Few street names are shown at most map zoom levels and this makes it more difficult to understand where I am, as well as more difficult to evaluate route options. (example below)

Is there a way to change the detail level shown at various zoom levels?

No - the map would be too cluttered to read if they attempted to produce the street names at significantly zoomed out levels. No way to change what is displayed at each zoom level. Like you, I find that sometimes it is necessary to zoom out to get a more general sense of location, then zoom in again to my normal level to see the detail. It's just "how it is".
