I finally go my "latest map garantee" map updated and when I installed it all of my prefrences and favorites were wiped out. I did a backup of my TomTom, but I'm afraid that if I restore it I'll be putting the old map back on. Is there any way to get my favorites back without manually entering them?

Copy the file mapsettings.cfg from the backed up map folder to the new map folder using Explorer. Home is not involved.

Once that is done, disconnect the unit PROPERLY from the computer using the Device Disconnect icon in your notification tray.

Now, go to favourites and delete one favourite you have. Now shut down the unit. Restart the unit and all your settings should be back.

Is there any risk of messing up my unit if I do this, and if I do mess something up and have to restore would I lose me new map? I only had a handful of favorites, maybe I'd be better of just re-entering them.

Does this happen every time you do an upgrade? That would tick me off if I subscribed to the quarrterly update feature and it blew away my favorites every time.

This is why many choose a different method for keeping their favourites.

You download a program called poiedit from PoiEdit - Main. Load your saved mapsettings.cfg file into it. It'll list each of your favourites. You then create a poi CATEGORY called maybe, _Favourites.ov2 (the underscore at the beginnning allows for this category to 'float' to the top of your poi custom categories.

You then save each of your favourites using poiedit as an item in your _favourites.ov2 category.

Finally, you copy the .ov2 file to each new specific map folder when it is released, just as you need to do now with any custom .ov2 files you've downloaded.

As I say, many prefer this method over trying to copy the mapsettings.cfg file and hoping each new version of the map 'sees' it. Not a sure thing.
