map update

I just bought new TomTom XL IQ Routes, i used map guarantee option but i cannot update my map.

it hangs on 'started downloading'.

i use proxy by the way. (have to) . but downloading updates like map share or something works perfectly fine.

and i tried like 5 times already to update this map, and failed.

when it says 'started downloading' i waited like 4 hours once, and i have very quick internet connection (besides the progress bar is not growing - it is just moving from left to right quickly and them again)

how can i trace what is really happening, and why it is hanging?

Do you have a directly connected computer or a wireless connection? The latter sometimes have difficulty with large files from TT servers.

Did you check the correct box in Home's Preferences regarding connections?

i have indirect connection - through proxy. i'm trying to update it in company where i work, because my home connection currently has download limit and don't want to use it. soon i will change internet at home to unlimited, but then the map guarantee will run out (30 days will pass)

i set everything correct i think, because i can update without problems Mapshare, GPSFIX or anything other. i just cannot update map.

i've looked in my documents\downloads and there are empty directories with name of my map, so the download process creates directories but doesn't create any file inside.

i have no idea what to do, can i request another method to download this map?

i know there are torrents with it , but i bought my tomtom legally to not use these type of things.

I do strongly suggest a direct connection for the dl.

Don't even mention torrent sites please.............

but i don't have direct connection available. what to do then?

besides, why this works for other updates just fine?

TomTom has proxy support, so why it doesn't work? any ideas what to do with it?

Other than calling support....I don't know.

Just one last thing to try, silly as it sounds.........

When you see the screen where the map dowloading start to do so, minimize the screen to the task bar and forget about it for a while. There are those that say that dl does goo faster and smoother with the screen minimized.

Shouldn't make a difference , but.......................

i agree, far less problems with a direct connect. If you must use a wireless connection, if possible do it very late at night when the tomtom servers aren't over burdened

juice99 isn't using a wireless connection. His/her employeer isolates their internal wired network from the internet by using a proxy server. Proxy servers simply act as a relay, and for a properly designed application there should be no problems.

The vast majority of medium to large companies in the developed world use proxy servers. If TomTom Home doesn't support proxies, then it is in serious need of an upgrade.

thank you dwgsp...

i really felt not understood at all in this thread. i know not everyone has to be IT expert, but recommending 'minimizing TOMTOM' to my problem is just... no comments.

anyways to those who understand my problem, my transfer is not even started somehow, because the file is not created at all, not even temporary one with 0 size. but all other downloads work fine, like mapshare updates, gpsquickfix etc.

and yes, this is normal proxy server, and i didn't have any problems with it so far, and i've connected to many different enviroments, internet bank accounts, online web games etc. etc. and everything was fine.

TOMTOM says it supports proxy, but clearly it doesn't, why? they ignored my support request for 3 days so far, i will wait until 1-2 weeks, and then give back this hardware i guess.

Even though you use a corporate proxy server it sounds as if the firewall may have the ports that the TomTom application uses for "LMG" blocked and those for "Update My Device" open, you can communicate out (unsecured port), but TomTom can't get in (secured port) with this particular download. It's bit unusual for an app to use different ports for downloads, but TomTom is anything but usual, LOL!!! Also, play around with the two options in TomTom Home "preferences" for proxy connection settings, "auto" & "manual" and see if that helps. Talk to any of the IT personnel at your job and see if they can help you out!.

HTH,

The Tomtom email support is relatively useless. Phone support is much more helpful.

Ask if they can add the latest map to your account, so you can download it later when you move to unlimited service.

All the non-map downloads are from download.tomtom.com - a simple, publicly accessible URL that is actually an akamai local host.

The maps are downloaded from a different server - a really long parameterized url for anti-piracy security. If you don't download with HOME's browser ID, it doesn't even let you download the file. Perhaps the long URL is giving your proxy server the fits, or not properly broadcasting the browser ID in the request.

Why don't you run the latest map guarantee at a friend's house? Once the map purchase is registered with your email address / device, you can re-download it onto your computer once you get unlimited access.
