OK..suppose I decide to do the map-update subscription thing...

What is the best advised approach to do this.

1) Make exploer BU of device (done)

I have NA 710

2) ???

3) ???

Just blast forward? Or, are there other advisable intermediate steps to do this best.

Also, will updating to the latest NA map give me lane guidance? Sorry if this seems ****, but better to ask FIRST and act SECOND.

Thank you for your time and input.

One more piece of info

As it stands right now, my internal memory has about 77Mb left with 710 maps. That's why I am a little paranoid.

Yes, use Explorer and back up your unit's contents to the computer. Ensure hidden files/folders are showing.

Now, I'd suggest this:

Get yourself a 4-gig sdhc card for the new map. SanDisk is the brand I have though there are other reliable ones, of course. It will be a lot more convenient for you in the long run. Select the sd card when you connect to Home for the new map to be downloaded to.

You have the current application but your map is almost 18 months old. Realize that you have to pay to get to the current NA 825 and then pay for 4 more updates over the next year.

Having the 825 map will provide not only ALG but IQ2 routing as well (IQ2 takes into consideration the time of day whereas IQ routing only considered the day of the week). You had neither on the 7 series map.

Two more things:
1) The 8xx series maps are more CPU intensive, because of IQroutes and the raised building images. You should upgrade to app 8.302 because it fixes a bug where the voices stutter under high CPU load
2) When you buy a subscription and a catch-up map, it appears that you pay the following for the catch-up map:
-Full price if your prior map is 6xx series (you don't even get offered the subscription until you upgrade maps)
-50% off if your prior map is 7xx series
-75% off if your prior map is 8xx series
3) The IQroutes maps have high power compression and are smaller than the equivalent 7xx map. You'll only be offered the v825 NA_2GB version, but you can download the full NA POI's from here:
https://www.tomtomforums.com/general-tomtom-discussion/16663-looking-na-8-25-poi-files.html
The full POI fits with about 200mb to spare on a 720's internal memory.

No, what you want to do is COPY the old map to the computer from the internal and then use Explorer to remove the map folder from internal,. This will free up space on internal and, with a 4-gig card, still leave lots of room on the card even when the map is there. That's how I have my 720 set up.

Excellent, so recapping:

1) Get 4G card

2) Make Explorer Backup

3) Update to new map --> Map to 4G card

4) Use Explorer to remove old map from internal memory

5) Update POIs if desired

Any special way to format 4G card (FAT32, NTFS, ???) I have an external card reader. I can pretty much prepare the card as I want.

Thanks for all of the info.

The card should be already formatted as fat32 right out of the package if it is a sdhc card.

Note - some older card readers can't handle SDHC cards. The 4GB card will appear as unformatted and if you format it the size will only be 2GB. Solution is to get a new reader.
