So I was about to update my maps..... and found an astonishing 79$ price tag for a map update.

Uh, my TomTom cost roughly the same amount. Don't you think it's just easier to THROW away your TomTom... and just buy a new one every other year? It costs roughly the same amount for a new one. A bit retarded.... eh?

TomTom currently has a subscription sale on. Eighteen months for the cost of twelve.

IOW, 6 updates for the price of four. Or to put it another way, about $50 for 6 updates.

I'm sure this has been asked before, but is there any way to see exactly what has been updated before buying the updates? Can I check to see if particular streets have been added or modified?

Not really. You can go to routes.tomtom.com to get an idea what's on the 840 map for your area (current is 845) or what some do is ask right here about a specific location/ road/ etc. on a specific map and people with that map are pretty good about assisting.

I agree that there should be a seamless way to see what's on a new tomtom map before you commit, but sadly there is not.

But thats $80 for 6 maps not just a single map, each version released every three months is a brand new map in its own right making them under $14 each, the only downside to getting the maps at such a cheap price is you have to pay up front the full $80, the alternate is to purchase a new map every year at $80 which is pretty stupid to be honest - Mike

You forgot one option in your poll: Buy a new GPS other than Tomtom.

The problem with the map subscription is simple: it's true you get an updated map every 3 months but, most people don't give a damn about a new map every 3 months so it's still way too expensive to pay Can$112 for 6 maps. Note that this offer put each map at about Can$19. The regular deal is about $28/map

Personally, I would not mind buying a map per year for about Can$30 for one map but at Can$100 for one map, I'll wait a bit... My current map is over 1 year and still take me where I want to go. I miss a few new roads and some changes but all Ihave to do to compensate is use my eyes and head.

If Tomtom could think straight, they would realize that 5 person willing to pay $30/map every year is more than one person paying $112 for 4 maps in that same year. Chances are there would be more people willing to pay $30 per year for a map than there are who are willing to pay $112 for 4 maps per year since most people don't need 4 maps a year.
