MAC or Windows?

I already put this question to TOMTOM techies, but I would like to hear from anyone here who has experience with both computers.

My question is: If you have both MAC and Windows computers available, which is best for running HOME software to sign-on/update a TomTom ONE XL.

MAC or Windows?

All feedback welcome! :]

Not really a fair question since TomTom Home is still stuck at version 1.6 on the Mac while at 2.1 in Windows.

I prefer my Mac for everything but I find the Windows version of TT Home more stable and easier to use since Virtual TomTom is working there. Sometimes the Mac version crashes when downloading updates. Had to use the Windows version to use the latest Map check. Also do Mapshare in Windows because of Virtual TomTom. I've installed colors, voices, POIs all from the TT store in both and noticed nothing different except the interface.

For just plugging in, mounting it on the desktop, and dropping in some files, I'll use the Mac every single time.

Hopefully when TomTom Home for Mac makes it to version 2, it will work better.

Thank you very much, sparky672.

I received a similar answer from TomTom customer service, citing the same reason - MAC software is out-of-date.

I appreciate your first hand knowledge on this, and I too prefer using MAC whenever possible.

I have many years of PC experience, but I switched to Mac in 2007 and like it so much. I still keep the Windows XP for certain jobs - guess we need to be ambidextrous ~ does that word apply to computer systems?

Having a PC right next to my Mac, I've tried them both. My PC gets used for playing games and connecting the TomTom.

For all Intel Mac owners remember that you can run Windows in/under Bootcamp (Free with Leopard), Parallels or VMWare so there is no need to a "Real PC".

No issues on my "aincient" Powerbook G4. Updates the TT just fine.

The Windows version supposedly is better, but I'd rather use the Mac version and pester TT to update the Mac software rather than accepting "Use Windows" as the answer.

This thread should have been a poll.

As a Mac user in the US, it's my understanding that we are closing in on a 7 to 8% market share here.

It's also my understanding that Mac market share globally is somewhat lower than that.

This forum seems to be unusually receptive to Mac users as well as have more Mac users than other forums in general.

Is it because TomTom products in general attract more Mac users or is it because TomTom is more popular in Europe?

Or is it that the Mac's market share is just far greater in certain parts of Europe?

No Mac Love

I am a Mac user, have been for 20 years.

Just bought a 720 yesterday and returning it today, which is a drag, but....there is currently no way to install the upgraded maps via the current Mac client according to TomTom technical support (and i use both terms loosely as they were neither technical or supportive).

After spending an hour on hold, and ten minutes on line it became apparent they didn't know what they were talking about, when a) the woman asked me to go to MyComputer and then b) informed me she doesn't know anything about McEntire computers!

I did speak to a Supervisor, who was unapologetic, in telling me there was no way for me to get the new maps until the new version of the Mac software comes out, and he could not give me any idea of when that might be.

Off to buy a Garmin.

The DELL PC is still working over in the corner, so I'll be downloading the TT software to it soon.

I have been using our new TT ONE XT-S as is, out of the box, and am NOT sorry that I bought it. It has been helpful in many situations of directing us to specific addresses.

Like all the other "smart toys" we buy, it really doesn't have a brain . . . so we have learned to Trust but Verify our new navigation aid.

I carry the MacBook Pro whenever we travel and would much prefer having access to tomtom software for the MAC when on the road - smartleydunn, you have lots more folks like me who are joining you longtime users of the MAC, so it is time the software writers recognize this growing market.

Is that possible? I am also a Mac user (and an Apple user since 1978). The Mac version of HOME seems to work fine on my dual G5 and I haven't had any crashes since installing it. It was able to install the TomTom system software update without any problems. Is there something inherently different about installing the maps which would create a problem?

The only thing I see that's missing from the Mac version of HOME is the "operate my device" function, and I don't see any reason why I would need that, after playing with it on a Windows machine.
