TomTom Model(s)
TomTom GO 740 LIVE
I have had my TomTom GO 740 LIVE since Sunday afternoon and on 3 different occasions my 740 would stop responding and reboot.

It has always happened when I was on the map screen and would tap the Voice Activation Icon.

Should I restore from my backup? If I do, do I need to back-up my new maps, or will they Automatically download again, when I hook-up again?

Thanks,
Jon

How was the backup made? Using Home or Explorer? I hope it was Explorer.

Make another backup now using Explorer. Ensure hidden files/folders are showing.

Have you tried a reset on the unit (hold the power button for 20 seconds, I think, on that model).

You talk about maps in the plural. What additional map do you have other than the NA that came with the unit?

I did use Explorer. I say Map(s) in plural because it came with NA 825 but then I d/l 830 with LMG.
Additionally, the unit has been reset...

I just want to make sure that it is just corrupted software, which I can fix... not a defective unit...

Also meant to ask...

If I do a restore from my Explorer back-up and then do a factory reset, does that delete any programs/folders that may have been added?

Or when i do my restore, should I format the TomTom and just copy my folders back over?

A reset is NOT Restore to Factory Settings. The only data you may have to input with a reset of the unit is the time.

If you have an Explorer backup of your complete unit's contents made AFTER you upgraded your map to 830, then you can reformat the unit and then simply use Explorer to copy your backuped contents to the unit.

I don't have a back-up since I put the 830 map on... When I said restore to factory settings, here is what I was thinking...

  1. Format Unit
  2. Restore from Explorer back-up... PRIOR to 830 map upgrade
  3. Perform Restore Factory Settings - (because I did put a few settings in there)
  4. Re-download my 830 maps
  5. Perform another Explorer Back-up with the 830 maps

Do you think this is an overkill? I am just not a big fan of systems locking up and rebootiung and want to eliminate any concern from the get-go.

If you upgraded to 830, then the map IS on your computer. Use Home to look at contents on my computer and you should see an item listed as maps. Click 'more info' to ensure it says 830.

When the time comes, you can use Home to Add maps-->the 830 map and choose to install.

You don't need a restore to factory settings if you're formatting the unit.

So, in summary: I'd do this...........

1. Reformat the unit.
2. Restore your backup.
3. Now, REMOVE the contents of the NA map folder.
4. Home-->Add Maps, select the 830 map (if you have confirmed it exists on your computer) and Install.
5. Make another complete Explorer backup to a different folder than when you had the 825 map.

mac back-up

I keep reading on how you should not use home to do your back up and to use Explorer. how should a
mac user do a back up?

Use Finder instead of Explorer.

The following detailed explanation is indeed pc (Explorer oriented) but does mention Finder once or twice....
