TomTom Model(s)
GO 720
I just got a GO 720 on black Friday and I'm wondering what the latest map for the US is that is available? It appears that I got a TomTom from old stock (the date is from 4/08) and the map version is 710.1584.

That's over a year old.

The newest map (and you ARE entitled to it) is North America 8.15.

But, you need firmware version at least at level Navcore 8 to be offered version 8 maps. (check your firmware version number by tapping the satellites on your unit; the next screen shows the firmware version number).

Problem is..............firmware 8.3 is buggy and we're all hoping a fix in the form of a new f/w release will come sooner than later.

Just remember.....your latest map guarantee is for 30 days.

I have version 7.221. How do I update to the latest version? What kind of bugs does the 8.3 have?

Updating the firmware is sequential in that when you connect to Home, it'll detect the firmware is old and offer you 7.481. Accept it and let it dl and install it. Then, when it's installed, again connect to Home and this time, it probably will offer 8.3. (Unfortunately, it won't offer you 8.01 which didn't create issues).

With 8.3, you lose the functionality of using the fm transmission to give voice instructions. (IOW, having the instructons come out of your radio's speakers). Also, the computer voices may stutter with 8.3 and there is a lag as the maps refresh.

There is hope a firmware fix will appear .... soon!

Just to add to dhn before you do anything do a complete backup of your unit with windows explorer.

If you would like to get app 8.010 (previous verson to the buggy 8.30 ) you can download it from here.

I *think* I performed a backup. I put the 720 on the dock and connected to HOME. From HOME I clicked on COPY TO COMPUTER which it copied it to My Documents>TomTom>FromDevice. There are images and other stuff in there, including zip files. Does this sound like I backed up my 720 correctly? If you tell me yes, I will then back it up onto a DVD.

So it can't just go from 7.221 to the 8.3? You have to install the in between versions?

Doing backup in home isn't as good as explorer please go to the site I gave you to receive better explanation.

There has been a lot of info on these forms regarding doing backup via explorer verses home.

Okay, I think I've got it! I went to My Computer where my TT shows up as "Internal G:". From there I copied and pasted it's contents into a new folder I created called TomTom. Did I do it right?
