Go 730
I bought an open box TomTom GO 730 on September 8th (my first gps). I've read numerous posts about people using the latest map guarantee and then a week later a new map comes out. After contacting TomTom about my expired guarantee they "applied the new 8.35 map" to my account. My first question is:

Is this really the newest map?

Then should I wait to see if another comes out before the first of October, or just go ahead and update so I'm sure to get the update (I've also seen that the servers go down magically just in time to make the people who wait til the last minute miss their chance.)?

Also, are there any tips I need to know before, after, and during an update? Thanks!

Welcome to the forums. Yes, 8.35 is the latest map. Another is no expected before November, so no reason to put off the download. The only special advice before you do is back up the device as it is now, including hidden files, using Explorer.

brewejen, you are a lucky person.

A month ago I convinced a friend of mine to buy a new 930 as he wanted a GPS now but travel to Europe next year.
After a complete Windows Explorer backup I used LMG and the 835 North_America map was downloaded and installed. I decided to hold off trying to upgrade his Western_and_Central_Europe_2GB map because I wanted him to get the full Western_and_Central_Europe map with the LMG.
I sent a Support Question (in his name/account./computer) asking them how I(he) should proceed so that the full W&CE map would be received when invoking the LMG on the European map.can be used for that.
They replied saying that a TomTom purchaser is only entitled to one LMG map and, in as much as he had updated his NA map he was not entitled to a second LMG.

I wrote back pointing out that the 930 comes with two different maps and they must honour the upgrade for both maps as they had done in the past for a friend of his (that is I).

Before sending that, because their reply could only be considered as idiotic, I decided to try the LMG on that smaller W&CE_2GB map, and it started to download.

Now, due to their denial to honour the LMG for the second map, bundled with the device I decided to carry on with that Support incidence.

They got back and said every device is entitled to only one LMG and cited this link.

Went back and said the should he not be empowered to authorise the LMG for the W&CE map to transfer this case to Sales/Marketing.

His reply today was
Thank you for updating your incident. The link provided is information for all TomTom devices. As for providing you with these maps, the terms and conditions do indicate that the promotion is good for "one free map download".

Unfortunately, I cannot find an advertisement on of off TomTom's web pages for the 930 that mentions the Latest Map Guarantee and wonder if anyone out there has something in writing to that effect.

This is no longer a question of the larger or smaller map, it is a question of TomTom honouring the LMG for both maps that come with the higher priced device.

In a sense I was lucky last year when the LMG reported , after upgrading the NA map that I had the newest map on my machine. From this and a UK list I was aware that the newer, larger map existed and I called Support. Upon providing proof of purchase the put the full size newest W&CE map in my account for downloading.

Call back a few times - you'll sometimes get a compassionate person who will just load the LMG map for download.

That's what I did when I got the short shrift last year in June on my 930.

Unfortunately, my friend is quite satisfied that he got the W&CE_2GB map updated and does not want to get involved with arguing with them on the phone.

Having the upgrade execute on both maps when applying LMG _is_ proof that the Support person is wrong in his assertion that a 930 owner is only entitled to an upgrade of one of the two maps that come bundled with the device. In my (his) initial Support question I had asked how to go about, with the SD card installed, to get the upgrade to the full W&CE map and not getting two upgrades for the same map.

I feel, as a matter of principle, he should have pursued this so that the next person does not get the same nonsense form Support.

TomTom's "official (?)" policy since last year has been that buyers of devices with dual continent mapping are only entitled to LMG for the map of the continent it was sold on. That doesn't mean that some buyers haven't convinced TT to supply both maps, but I wouldn't count on it. They appeared to be a little more flexible up until the quarterly updates started last year. A bit stricter now from the posts I see.

In that case I am rather glad for my friend that their computers haven't been told yet about this policy change.
I had asked how to update the other continent map to the full size one, not the abbreviated 2GB one.
I did the LMG for the second map through HOME after Support informed that there will be only one map upgrade.

new 730 with Bootloader 10012

I've got a new 730 with the below info:

P N A :TomTom GO 730 Australia
DeviceName:TomTom GO 730
BootLoaderVersion:10012
Serialno.: *********************
DeviceUniqueID:*************
NavCore:8351.9982
Current Map: Australia
Map Version No:835.2419

Why is my booloader number so low when everyone else seems to have a 5+? Can i simply upgrade my bootloader by copying the bootloader with 5+ 'system' file over to my unit? Is it safe?

Are you sure that those 5+ boot loader numbers apply to X30 models?
My 930 uses the same but I got in in may 2008.

That is usually caused by manual application installations. The latest applications don't always come with the latest bootloaders, and HOME staggers installations to achieve a full install.

The easiest thing (in my opinion), is to create a backup, then delete all files in the root of the Tomtom (don't delete folders). Then run Update My GO repeatedly until HOME installs app 8.351. Sometimes if won't give you a new app until you turn off/on the Tomtom a few times. By the time you get app 8.351 you should have the proper 5-series bootloader.

Also, when you're done, manually install "phone connection settings" from "Manage my GO", since HOME forgets to auto-update that.
