Just bought XL IQ LIVE

I've bought an XL LIVE today, and I'm finding the manual inadequate. I've had the problem that, despite showing a year's subscription to Live Services, I'm getting an error symbol on Traffic on the display, and a message that I need to subscribe! That can wait till Monday, when I'll ring TT help desk.

I've done the backup, using Explorer, and then downloaded TT HOME and updated the softtware. I haven't tried updating the maps yet, I want to leave that for an hour or so.

One or two questions raise their heads:

1. There's a light on the bottom of the unit which turns green when I plug the unit into my laptop. Does this mean that the battery is being charged?

2. In HOME, there's a reference to "Premium Safety Cameras". Is this different to ordinary Safety cameras? And do I need to download them?

3. If I browse a map, or use "show route as map images" I can't see the safety cameras...should I be able to?

4. I can use "Prepare Map" ok, but can I save the route I prepare?

5. How does a prepared route become the actual route?

6. If I want to insert a via, using the map, how do I mark the place on the map that I want for the via?

I'm sure these are stupid questions, which are explained in the manual, but if so i can't find them.

1. There's a light on the bottom of the unit which turns green when I plug the unit into my laptop. Does this mean that the battery is being charged?
Yes the green LED denotes the device is charging, although feeding power from the PC with the device switched on it probably isn't getting much in way of a charge as the power output from a USB socket on a PC is limitted to 500mA.

2. In HOME, there's a reference to "Premium Safety Cameras". Is this different to ordinary Safety cameras? And do I need to download them?
The Premium Cameras are based upon data provided by Road Angel, they are different to thouse supplied on non Live devices, if I were you I would have a look at what PocketGPSWorld.com have to offer in way of a Speed Camera database as its second to none for use in the UK.

3. If I browse a map, or use "show route as map images" I can't see the safety cameras...should I be able to?
The TomTom cameras are hidden from view in the browse map screen, and as I recall they cannot be seen at any other time bar driving/ using route demo.

4. I can use "Prepare Map" ok, but can I save the route I prepare?
Once a destination is set the device will always head for that, another option to select the destination previously planned is to use Navigate To/ Recent Destination and select the correct place from the presented list. Saving an actual route isn't possible unless you use the Itinerary option and mark each turn on the route as a waypoint - Bit of a waste of time though TBH. Bear in mind the route offered may well change due to Live Traffic and the day/ time of day you actually set off on your trip due to IQ Routes data so pre-planning a route isn't really much use.

5. How does a prepared route become the actual route?
See anser to point 4.

6. If I want to insert a via, using the map, how do I mark the place on the map that I want for the via?
Position the cursor at the location you want to use and tap Done, the device will then insert the via in to the route - Mike

Hi Mike, and thanks for the reply.

I planned a route, then did a demo, and I could see the safety cameras flashing by, so I clearly have them. In which case I assume I can ignore the premium safety cameras. Since I have the year's Live subscription, I'll leave the PocketGpsWorld database alone for the moment.

I managed to insert a via; because I wanted to go from M25 eastbound to A1 northbound I did it by finding the junction on the map. I just tapped the map on the appropriate carriage, pressed on "done", and the route was re-calculated. However, on going back to the main display map, I got a blue band along the bottom, with a message "re-planning" and an orange guage line. I can't find any mention of this in the manual; is it usual?

Jim

Not too sure why it did the second re-planning but if you had the device in the house then it might have been jumping its current location between a couple of adjacent roads, my units do this when in the house, in the car they are fine.
Another reason that can trigger a re planning is when you start to move, your heading might be 180 degrees out from what the device expected.

Take care using the "Via" function, if you position the cursor on the wrong motorway carriageway the route will calculated to take in the point on the other side of the road adding considerable distance to your trip, although I guess you know this from the wording of your last reply - Mike

Hi Mike

Yes, the first time I tried a via, I was actually just off the A1, on a different road.....added about 60 miles to the route! Did it again after zooming right in, and could even pick the correct side of the dual carriageway.

I've now got a couple of new queries:

1. When I browse the map, wherever I press on the map to move it, it displays a blue cursor symbol, and what I assume are house numbers either side of the road.If I lift my finger, and press somewhere else I get a thin green or red line connecting the old and new cursor positions. Not a problem, but they're annoying. Is it possible to suppress these?

2. Itried "google search" for a local restaurant, and it worked fine. However, if I go into "google search"? again, it shows the restaurant name with a number "1"., and I can't find any way to delete it. Am I stuck with these and any other searches?

3. Having put the via in the wrong position, can I use the cursor and "correct position" to move the via? So far as I can see, I have to start again from the beginning.

I don't know if it matters, but when I connected to TT HOME I download the latest version of the software....

I used the TT on its first trip today, so I'm now sitting in anice pub near York, having a very nice pint!

To my surprise, when going round the M25, the Live Traffic service came to life. Does this mean that the service only shows as active when you're actually driving? It makes sense that it should, but it doesn't actually say that anywhere. And it doesn't explain why it said I wasn't subscribed.

The LIVE service should work everywhere you have Vodafone reception. Even while stopped.

There was a similar issue in the USA where the LIVE "free" period wasn't working for one customer, and then yesterday it started working all of a sudden (many others continue to have problems).

So perhaps Tomtom is slowly fixing all the LIVE issues on their servers.

In either event, it's working now. I didn't really understand all the messages from Live traffic (I'll have to read the manual), but I find I like the Live google local,
