I'm not an idiot when it comes to computers but this thing (Tomtom Go 630) is a mystery to me. Just bought it, turned it on and everything looked great. A restaurant in my town was in the wrong place on the TomTom so figured I better hook it up to my also new Windows 7 PC and install the software and get maps etc. The CD wouldn't install to Windows 7 properly so I told it to connect to the internet and download new version of Tomtom Home 2.7. I connected to the TomTom home page and was informed that I needed to purchase an update to the Canada/US my map on the TomTom so I did for 70Euros or something. When I tried to run/install my new maps I was told that my installed maps needed an update first so I downloaded whatever it asked. After a long time downloading I was told that I didn't have enough room on the TomTOM do run the install. I ran downtown and got a 4gb microsd card and adapter and put it in the tomtom. Problem solved or so I thought. The installation of what I think was my purchased map seemed to execute OK and I downloaded some additional voices and such. When I turn on the TOMTOM I get "no maps found" and nothing happens. Hook it up to the PC and try to "operate my device" and says same thing. Click on "add maps" "north America 2GB" is on my computer and it comes back and says I'm short -76mb or something. What's going on? Does this thing have any memory when new out of the box? Is the 4gb SD card to small?

From what I can tell, there are various issues here.

First of all, if you just bought the 630, you are entitled to a free Latest Map Guarantee. (the latest is 845) You should not have bought the newest map.

It appears you bought it anyway. And there is a Canadian map site for TomTom that you should have been able to buy the map in Canadian dollars, not Euros.

Anyway, look here:
C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\My Documents\TomTom\HOME\Downloads\complete\maps\

You should see the purchased map in a compressed zip file. Well, the 4-gig sdhc card is plenty large enough to install the map to.

So, if indeed if you see the map where I pointed you to, then use Explorer to see what is on the sdhc card now. Do you see what appears to be the map folder? If so, do you see a file within the NA map folder with an extension of .meta.dct?? If not, then look in the compressed map folder on your computer and you'll see within it, besides other stuff, a cab file with just the .meta.dct file. Use WinRar to extract that file to the NA map folder on your sdhc card and see if everything works.

If it does, then make an Explorer backup, not Home, of the internal storage contents. Make another one of the sdhc card.

And call support at 866-486-6866 to see if you can get a credit for the 845 map you purchased that you were eligible to get for free.

Have files nothing on sd card

Thanks for your help. I can see the files on the PC. Can you be more specific as to what the directory structure on the sdcard should look like names of olders, anything in root etc.

Looking better!

Thanks a bunch!! Spent better part of my Sunday afternoon with this.
I have a display now on the Tomtom. It's telling me the GPS signal was lost 2:00 min ago and a map of somewhere far from here but it's better than before. My folder I created was called North_America_2GB I'll get in touch with the tech support tomorrow regarding the maps I bought. What I bought was an 18 month upgrade package so it sounded like the cost of buying one of these. I'd like to get a map of Mexico as well but am feeling a little reluctant to mess with this anymore. My display is back to "normal" now as it looks like my neighborhood.
