When I set up an itinerary, the system seems to use either my home or where I am according to the satelites to calculate the starting point when figuring out the route.
If I want to look at the route for a future trip, I should be able to label the first point on the itinerary as the start point.
Instead I only have the option of "waypoint" or "mark visited".

If I want to plan ahead and determine the best route from Calgary to Los Angeles, but I live in Toronto, how do I do that? Do I have to temporarily change my home to Calgary or something?

There should be an option named Route planning, I think it's called...the symbol is an A with an arrow to a B. That would allow you to enter a start and a destination irrespective of your current location

What good 'ole smokie is speaking about is the PREPARE ROUTE ICON:

You can also create a custom itinerary from the Itinerary Planning icon and this will allow you to create a route from a point A to point B to point C, etc:

If you do not have these icons in your menu, you'll need to create a custom menu as I describe on the following page:
>>> Custom Menu <<<

Just insure you have the following code for each of these icons:
MENUITEM|TASK_MENU_PLAN_ATOB|
MENUITEM|TASK_ITINERARY|

OK, I'm familiar with that. Here is what I'm trying to do/understand.

What is the benefit of using Itinerary over A to B.

Can I plan multiple routes with intermediate points (TomTom One 3rd Edition with patch that includes Itinerary icon) and store them as itineraries or do I have to manually do A to B with intermediate points every time? I may want to set some trips that I use occasionally.

You can plan multiple routes, and save them individually as itineraries. the Prepare route function is just if you want to see a hypothetical route once, and you're not currenty located in either point. I use it to see the travel time, or distance quickly. That's what I use it for.

tbil99, the solution to your problem is to put yourself in a place where you don't have a GPS signal - down in your basement, for example.

When you try to run your itinerary, a screen will come up saying something to the effect that 'you don't have a GPS signal. Do you wish to define your start point.' You can then set the start point by the usual various methods - point on map, favorite, etc.

Yes that is not easy to figure out, :p they should change icon for a house not A.
