Is this a good mount for my TomTom XL S?

Looks like it might be a good mount ----- but what is a friction mount --- how does it work? Is that another way to describe a suction type mount?

This looks like a very good deal. It looks like a 'NavMat' type of base, which is quite heavy and just sits on you dash - no sticking or suction. It's weight is sufficient to hold the unit and keep it from sliding around.

The mount part appears to be a suction mount that sticks to a flat disk in the center of the base. I would assume that you could also stick it directly on the windshield too - superior to the original TomTom mount.

Why don't you just use the circle pad that comes with the XLS that has the sticky bottom?

2 reasons...

1 - I rather not do that on top of my dashboard
2 - In a car under the hot sun, it will eventually will come off and leave a risadue (spelling?) behind.

Just a note to all; Stay away from the Flexible Gooseneck type mounts. On city streets and some state routes there is just too much vibration. They bounce around a lot as a GPS unit is heavier than a cell phone or PDA. After I tried one I noticed that 95% of the GPS mounts are not of the Flexible Gooseneck type.

Looks like a good mount

That should be a good mount for your ONE XL. It looks like it features a bean bag type "friction mount" for the base and an ARKON Robust Base windshield suction mount that's sitting on the mount. It's one of the strongest windshield suction mounts you can buy. If it's sitting on the Semsons dash mount base, then it should be a fairly good solution overall.

Arkon also introduced a new family of Weighted Dash Mounts on Friday. I think Semsons will be offering these as well.

See http://www.arkon.com/weighted_friction_dash_mount.php
The ARKON version of the weighted dash mount includes an adhesive safety hook (optional) just in the event that you want additional peace of mind when using a non-secured mount.

Has anyone tried a vent mount? Any opinions on them?

My original mount has no problem sticking to the winshield but I find it tilting slowly down in cold and warm weather so I have to constantly recorrect the angle.
