TomTom Model(s)
One 3rd Edition
Hello,

I received a TT One 3rd Edition for Christmas, and with a couple of minor exceptions I like it a lot.

My wife likes it too, so I'm thinking of buying her a GPS to keep in her car all the time.

Please check out this deal for a refurbished TT One:

http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=205833413&adid=17653&dcaid=17653

I have some questions about it:
  • What model of One is this? Is it what people on this forum refer to as a V2?
  • What are the differences between this model and the One LE that Best Buy sells?
  • Does this model use the same mount and USB connector as my 3rd Edition? I've already purchased an extra mount and power cable for her car, and I want to make sure that they will be compatible with the new unit I buy.
  • Does this model have as sensitive of a receiver as my One 3rd Edition has?
  • I see that this model only has 32 MB RAM, and that its maps come preloaded on an SD card. Is this an acceptable trade-off?
  • Can I load the latest firmware and maps onto this model? If yes, will it support itinerary planning and MapShare?
  • One of the things I've been bitching about on my 3rd Edition is that it won't auto-power off when it loses power at the USB connector. Will this unit auto-power off? This is **very** important to me, because while I'm confident that I can remember to turn off my GPS when I turn off my car, my wife won't think to do that. Whatever GPS I buy her must auto power off.
  • In general, I'm not opposed to buying refurbished products. I do it all the time. Do you think this is a good deal?

I look forward to any recommendations or advise you can offer.

Thanks,

Steve

I remember reading on here problems with the refurbished units. personelly I would not buy a refurbished unit but thats just me. On this site go to search and type in refurbished. After reading some of them I would then make my decision.

(Where is spell check !!! )

If you like the 3rd edition, why not get a *brand new* one from ebay. There are over 100 there now. With a brand new one, you have the full warranty too. If you don't like PayPal, there are some there that take charge or check.

Here's a brand new one at a current bid of $103 (+$15 shipping)

Nope, I will not buy my wife a 3rd Edition because it does not Auto Power Off with loss of external power. I'm pretty sure that the One LE will do this, as long as it has the latest firmware.

So the 3rd Edition fails my litmus test. Now I could buy a new One LE on eBay, but they're selling for approx. $175 after shipping. I'd like to get one for less. I guess I was spoiled by the $130 Black Friday deal I got when I bought my 3rd Edition.....

Is it a One 3rd Edition? If that's all WalMart sells, then I'm not interested. My wife's GPS **must** auto power off when she turns off her car.

My One XL-S has an option to turn off when external power to the unit is lost. I wish it would auto turn back on too, though (mind you, maybe it does - I've never tried.)

Apparently version 7.xxx of the firmware removed that from models that used to have that feature.

So does anyone else have an opinion on the refurbished unit I linked to in the original post? Can anyone answer the questions I asked?

I feel like my post got hijacked....

It should be functionally good, but don't expect a free map upgrade...

  • [*]My guess is that it's a One, version 2 (AKA "New Edition").

[*]It is unlikely that it has the latest maps...probably 6.65. I wouldn't expect to get a map upgrade guarantee with the refurb. Some people have received an upgrade, but they had to fight for it. Are you willing to go through that hassle?

[*]The firmware/operating system is a free upgrade through Home, but is not very attractive without AT LEAST the 6.75 map.

[*]Without knowing what the serial number is on the unit, it is hard to say which GPS chip(s) is/are installed. If the serial number begins with an "E" it will be SiRFIII in North America, otherwise it will be the Hammerhead chip. They are functionally equivalent and seem to have the same sensitivity. Browse around here for information about the differences between the versions.

[*]The mount and power connections are the same as on the One v3.

[*]With the firmware upgrade to 7.x, you get the option to have the unit switch off when the external power is lost. You'll see the check box under "Battery saving preferences". You'll need to make sure that the power outlet in your vehicle is not energized when the ignition is off.

[*]Itinerary planning is supported, but MapShare will only be available if you have the 6.75 map or higher?

[*]The map and supporting navigation functionality is on the SD card...exclusively. I think the 32MB you referred to is for the operating system and is not accessible by you. Not a significant consideration. It is what it is, and it seems to be enough.

[*]The One LE is a rebadged One v2 (likely a Hammerhead chip), but with the latest firmware and a map version that supports Mapshare, etc.

Wiley,

Thank you so much for the very thorough response.

Regarding the Map Guarantee issue that you brought up, since I already have a new One 3rd Edition that I just received for Christmas (which has the latest maps), can't I just copy those maps over to the refurbished unit?

Thanks again,

Steve

No, because the maps are encrypted specifically on each unit and will only work on that unit.

OK, this is exactly the kind of info I was looking for. I was afraid that might be the answer.

It looks like my best bet is to buy a new, unopened TT One LE on eBay (since the Best Buy website doesn't show any in stock, and even makes it look like they might never get any in stock). I would consider a new One 3rd Edition, but that unit's inability to auto power off with loss of external power is a show stopper for me.

So unless anyone can think of a reason that a new One LE from eBay is a bad idea, I guess it's time for the SnipeMeister to get busy on eBay!

Steve -

I would personally go for this deal on ebay:
>>> TomTom ONE LE <<<

I have confirmed with my LE that is has the auto-OFF feature with power removed. The refurb doesn't give enough info to know exactly what model it is. The deal on ebay is approx the same cost and brand new.

Yup, that's the kind of deal I'm after. I think I can get one for a little less by sniping an auction in the last 10 seconds rather than taking a Buy It Now.

Thanks,

Steve

Hello Steve! The link on that unit says mfg's part number is 1N00.188. I have what is referred to as the V2 model which looks identical to the one in your link except the mfg's part number on mine is 4N00.005. Not sure what the differences are. I'm almost positive the older models didn't have as much internal memory so the maps were stored on the card. Now if it will except the later versions of the operating system is a question for some one here that may have one. I have version 7.162 on my unit and it does offer a choice of having the unit to power down when the external power is disconnected. I didn't see a picture of the bottom of the unit so it's hard to tell, but i would bet good money that it is a mini usb connection which is what the other tomtom units use for computer and power access. By the shape of the unit i would venture to say that it is going to use the same mount as the other tomtom 1 units.

On my tomtom if i go to the "Change preferences" menu and go to the third screen it offers up a menu choice for "Battery saving preferences" where it offeres up the option to have the unit power down when external power is removed. Check yours.

Bottom line is that someone with that version of the tomtom is gonna have to answer your questions. But my personal and humble opinion is that you can buy a new one in the box for about the same money and have the newest maps and software already installed.

If after checking your 3rd edition menus for the battery saving preferences and it just isn't there, you may still find a V2 for sale somewhere. I found mine at Radio Shack a few months ago and have seen them in a couple of the office sales stores like Staples and Office Max. The way to know if it is a version 2 or not is that the v2 comes in a green box and 3rd edtion comes in the plastic see through shell.

Good Luck!
