My email to TT Support.

"It seems there is a new feature which enables voice input recognition on the 720 device. Unfortunately, a requirement of this feature is map version 7.10. Being an early adoptor of the product, I had no opportunity to upgrade to that version. Therefore, I cannot enable voice recognition. It seems somewhat unfair that if I were to wait and purchase my unit at a later date, I would be eligible for a new feature such as this.

I would appreciate, it at all possible, to be able to upgrade my map version to support this new feature."

TT Reply.

"Thank you for taking the time to contact TomTom Customer Support regarding the voice recognition feature on the Go 720. It is our goal to provide you with an exceptional customer experience. We are always happy to help.

Currently this feature is not linked to the map versions on the unit. It is linked to the application version on the TomTom. In all actuality this feature is not sup[posed to be included on the 720, but due to an error on our part the wrong applications were released for the 720 which had enabled this on these units. In future updates this feature will be removed. We do apologise for the inconvienence.

If you have any further questions or comments, please email or call us at 866-486-6866 Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM until 7:00 PM EST. Thanks again for writing. At TomTom we believe in showing you the way the easy way.

With Best Regards,

Sierra
The TomTom Customer Support Team"

Now I am confused. There seems to be one group of techs saying that VR was to be opened with the last update on purpose. Now, it's supposed to be disabled. Well, what is it? It would be unfair to give and then take away. I hope the people at TomTom understand that. They should just leave well enough alone. Why pick on the 720 owners, when they have the 730 to concentrate on? I believe Verizon gave and take away features on the motorola V710 and they were slapped with a class action suit. Anyway, I hope this isn't true.

I too am confused.

VR works on all X20's w/o issue. [regardless of map version or firmware]

There's threads all over the place which explains in detail how to get VR working in under 30 secs.

.............yes, very confused

As far as I know you need at least map v 7.10. It doesn't work with 7.05. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Well, kinda :D

PM sent. It'll help ya out

thx chilly.

Update:

My New Response:

"I direct you to the following document from the TT website.

TomTom GO 520/720 New Features

http://www.tomtom.com/lib/doc/Whats_new_in_GO_520-720.pdf

Voice recognition is clearly stated as a new feature."

TT New Response:

"We do understand the frustration that a situation such as this can cause, and thank you for providing the link. However the information that you provided is from the European website and references the European units. Unfortunately at this time this feature not available on the U.S. version of the Go 720 at this time."

NOT TRUE - This is accessible from the US site. Talk about false advertising! Just wait til they remove the feature with a future upgrade/downgrade.

Sometimes I just dont understand the way some people run their business...Somtimes a superior product can get killed due to poor customer service or poor business decisions. Take HP for example, use to love them and all their products, had an issue, refused to resolve it in a way that was acceptable to me, will never buy from them again. Case closed

Ya, I heard you the first time. So this sticky is wrong?

http://tomtomforums.com/showthread.php?t=7353

Voice Recognition on a North American 720 DID require a MINIMUM of NA map 7.10, firmware of 7.221 and the support_asr.dat file with the '1' in it. VR did NOT work on NA maps prior to 7.10 whatsoever. And VR was never meant for NA 720's; it was the 'hack' people became aware of that enabled VR.

To compound the confusion .... the most recent batch of NA 720's where owners found VR working (out of the box with no file hack needed) were not meant for these shores but for Europe where their 720's always had VR.

And then ..... :( ..... the firmware upgrade to 7.480 blew up VR for users in NA for both 720's and 920's. Firmware 7.481 brought it back for most people but has introduced other "iisues".

Right now, it appears that firmware 7.221 is the 'gold' version. Pretty much everything works with that.

But...there is nothing wrong with Pedro's sticky.

Thanks. I'm now running VR with 715 maps with 7.481(if I recall correctly).

Ya got things all worked out now ?

Amazing how easy it is to sort things out....and make um right. :) :)

Yes...is it normal that when I now press "Navigate To" I go directly to a screen wanting me to enter the STATE?

It used to go to the page which said Navigate to -> Home/POI/Address etc.

Also, it is not prompting me to speak the STATE. I guess it only does City/Street/Number?

Thx.
