anyone know how to download a POI that can tell me the nearest wi-fi or internet cafes in my area? I'm in the Washington DC metro area (USA).

I'm unclear. Do you have a site where you can find such a poi file? If so, just download the file (unzip if necessary) and put the .ov2 file (and associated .bmp file, if available) in the specific map folder using Explorer.

POI Files for United States & Elsewhere | POI Factory is a good place to find over seventy Washington DC Wi-Fi POI's all contained within one file, ready to use after you load it onto your TomTom. For a first-time user, you will need to go through an easy site registration, then logon and look for POI File Categories / wifi hotspots / Washington DC. The file of information was last updated about a year ago.

You should download this POI file for your GPS (I'm assuming it's a TomTom, so the needed file is called DC-wifi.csv). I usually download POI files first onto my computer, then I find it later and do the transfer to the TomTom. Also download the WiFid..BMP file. This is optional; if you don't have it I believe that TomTom will assign a default image.

Copy both these files onto your TomTom using a 3rd party program TYRE or similar other program, or by placing the files manually into the folder where your maps are located (on my TomTomXL it's the folder called USA_Canada.)

Upon rebooting your TomTom, the POI's can be found under DC_wifi.
