Installing HOME 2

Trying to update HOME to HOME 2; download and "install" goes OK but then get error message 1058 - "the service cannot be started either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it." TOMTOM Tech support says "not my problem, mon" - it's a Microsoft error code and their problem. I've tried to install on three different machines with same result - error 1058. All three machines are Vista, two of them with 64 bit system, one a 32 bit system. I also tried to install on an older XP based system where the installation went perfectly. I'm not keeping that older XP system, so that's not an option.
QUESTION: What SERVICE is disabled or what ENABLED DEVICE should I be looking for as part of this problem. First TECH SVC response said to try with GPS Dock connected when installing; didn't help. Didn't change when I disconnected the GPS Dock. I've also tried running under compatibility mode for XP but that didn't change anything. Is VISTA the problem? Anyone else have similar problem on Vista based machine?
Appreciate suggestions. Thanks.

Many are reporting issues trying to install with a Vista O/S.

In Services, is Homerunner an active service?

I don't see Homerunner at all in Services; only TomTom item is Home Service (for ejecting devices) or so it says. Any thoughts on getting Homerunner installed?

I mispoke........

It is indeed TomTom Home service which you appear to have.

A new version of Home has been released today, apparently. See if that improves things.

with the new home releaised today I got some crazy error messages. I had to delete home first from the control panel and then redownload home from their web site . Everything works perfectly.

Ever since installing HOME Version 2.71.1812 I have been unable to update my device (A Go 720). Wish i'd never downloaded it, as everything was working fine previously.

Basically, what happens is that as soon as I connect the device to the docking cradle, the PC mouse freezes, and the device is not recognised. Remove the device, unplug the cable from the USB port, and everything with the PC goes back to normal again.

The device works fine (100%) in my car, and has no problem that I am aware of. It just won't connect to, or even be recognised by the PC.

Connect the device to the cable, and it cannot be recognised as a drive. Nothing at all, so I can't even restore from a backup, because i can't get the PC to recognise the device.

TomTom have been less than helpful. Basically they want me to send the device back, and because it is out of warranty, charge me to "repair" it. There was nothing wrong with it in the first place before i installed this wretched software. Why on earth I should have to foot a bill due to a fault in their software is quite arrogant cheek. It certainly won't be happening.

SO..........can anyone offer me any ideas on how to get round this? Obviously, something has glitched within the device, not allowing it to be recognised at all by the PC.

I've tried soft resets, removing the card, etc etc, but I can't even format the memory, because i can't access the device to do it!!!

Help please, and Thanks if you have a solution. If you HAVEN'T downloaded this new software.....my advice is..DON'T, bnecause you might well find that your Tomtom has also stopped responding. :( :( :(

Remove the Home application from your computer (Control Panel-->Add/ Remove Programs and scroll down to TomTom Home.

Download and install Home 2.6.4 from this link.

Now, connect your unit to the computer. Does that help?

NO connection

Thanks for that DHN.

Tried the whole 9 yards.

Uninstalled the Home application, and downloaded as advised, but the problem remains.

It's obviously a glitch on the device which is preventing the connection to my PC.

It wasn't there before though!!

Can't even format it, as it isn't recognised, unless you know a way to do it.

Thanks again for your suggestion.

Thanks for reply DHN (and those below your reply as well). Nothing seems to have fixed the problem. Can anyone provide a specific link to TOMTOM site for download of "new" release cited in messages?. I'm not sure that the link on TTHOME site takes me to the latest version for download. When I download from TOMTOM site and install two things happen: 1.) Program installs and I get a new directory TOMTOMHOME2. 2.) At end of installation I get error message 1058. When I run HOME2 I get the 1058 error message. There are a bunch of subfolders in the TTHome2 directory. I've tried deleting all versions of TTHome; run registry cleaners to clean out residual junk from uninstall, etc.
The only thing that seems to continue working is the earlier version to Home (v 1.6 from May 2007).

If the Tomtom can't be seen from the computer as a drive, then HOME isn't the issue.

1) try a pin reset
2) try another computer and usb cable, you don't need HOME installed, just see if the Tomtom shows up as a drive letter with readable files.

Post back if these don't work as there are some other things to try.
