I can't initialise SD card

This is my first satnav, bought second hand. I am trying to use a 2GB Transcend SD card. As per the instructions, I remove the card, perform a Backup, insert the card and attempt a Restore. However, I get a dialogue on my Vista computer asking me to choose SD card or internal memory. I choose SD, then get an error message stating there is no card present which was there before - see below. Any ideas?

ERROR: Note: Some volumes (for example, a storage card) that were present during a previous backup are not currently present on your navigation device and cannot be backed up or restored.

Tomtom home's backup feature is flakey. It is probably expecting a no-SD backup to be restored to a no-SD unit.

Here's how to accomplish what you want to do:

1) remove the SD from the tomtom
2) plug the tomtom into the computer, close down tomtom HOME if it opens up.
3) set windows to show hidden/system files and folders and use windows explorer to copy everything from the tomtom drive onto your hardrive. This is the reliable way to back up your tomtom.
4) Make 1000% sure your backup of the map folder is good - you can't restore a map for free if you weren't the initial purchaser of it. Everything else can be easily restored for free if something goes wrong
5) Then format your SD card as fat32, and if you want to wipe out the internal tomtom memory you can format it as fat32 too.

Now you have a choice. The tomtom 720 and later has both 2gb internal memory plus whatever you insert for SD or SDHC memory. The application can be installed in either spot, and the maps can be stored in either spot. The application and maps don't have to be stored in the same place, so pick where you want to put each. If the application is both on the SD and internal memory, tomtom will use the SD application.

The maps are in their own folders, probably North_America_2GB and Guam. Everything else is application files.

Copy application to where you want it from your explorer backup, and copy the maps to where you want them. Restart, and you're good to go.
