Hi there,
As you can probably see I am a newbie here as well.

I just wanted to point out that there are instructions on this website somewhere, which give you guidance as to take a complete backup of the contents of your Tom Tom before you make any modifications. Please note that I am talking about a "Complete" backup - and not the semi-usable backup option that the "HOME" software provides on the PC.

This has saved my day with Tom Tom and I thank myself for being careful with my Tom Tom.

So please make a complete back up before modifying anything on the Tom Tom.

First, I am amazed that you found a new 720. Only new units include the latest map update offer. Understanding where you found this unit and what maps are already on it will help. Please use your PC to look for any folders that might indicate map folders (likely a folder that includes the words North America, etc.) and tell us what is there.

Since the 720 will accept an SD card, many of us install a 4GB card and install that and place all of our maps there and leave everything else in the internal memory.

Latest firmware is 8.351.
Latest map is 850.

What firmware and map do you have now?

Heed the advice above about a full backup using Windows or your MacOS before doing any updates to your unit. Copy ALL of the information from your 720 to a folder on your PC. Do not trust TomTom Home to do it correctly.

Launch TT Home and select

tools > use latest map guarantee > [at this point you'll either get a freebie or you'll get nothing]

Don't worry if ya don't get a free/updated map. Map updates are way way over-rated. 99.9% of U.S. roads have NOT changed between your current map and the one you'd have to pay for.

Latest firmware is 8.300.
Latest map is North America 2GB 710.1584
Wow - that's an OLD map. Current firmware is 8.351 and map is 850. Here's what I'm going to recommend:

1) Make a FULL backup of your unit using your PC. Be certain that all hidden files and folders are "visible" when you do it. Take the entire TomTom and park it in a folder somewhere. Be SURE that your North_America_2GB folder is there when you're done! It's described in detail here: https://www.tomtomforums.com/genera...4-how-backup-contents-your-unit-computer.html
2) Now use the TomTom Home application to move all voices except one computer voice (I really like Susan) off to your PC. That may well free up a lot of space.
3) NOW connect to Home again and try the update. You should update both the firmware and the map.

Like I say, I'm AMAZED that you found a new 720 in the box, but as weird as that is, TomTom should honor the LMG (Latest Map Guarantee) for your unit.

Thanks everyone help
My GO 720 updating to Current firmware is 8.351 and map is 850.

Thanks again

Excellent. Now that you're fully updated, do that full backup again so that you've got a stake in the ground should we ever need to solve any problems that might occur down the road. Enjoy your TomTom (which now, by the way, equivalent to a 730 due to the firmware upgrade).
