I din't went to my car and watch, but I assume that the usb cable for the car is according to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB so it mean that

-LEFT +RIGHT

I am going to take a cable from the fuse box and bring it to my tomtom, I might use a old usb cable that I don't use anymore. I foud the pin out, I tought of posting it to people. For fuse I might use a 5A fuse wire like in car radio.

That way I can keep my cigarette wire handy if I change vehicule. Also the cable will be hidden under the dash with a plactic holder so impossible to see for theives.:D

Ok, maby not a good idea to place 12v into your tomtom. Don't try it, it might kill your GPS.

I wouldn't do that unless you're sure of what you're doing. Any wire coming from you car's fuse box would most probably be 12 volts -- not the needed 5 volts that powers/charges the TomTom.

You can always get a cigarette power-plug splittler.

A variable 12 volts at that. Brownouts and surges are common in cars, especially when you first start the car.

Why didn't you take time and effort to read the details on the original car charger? It clearly states its 5V. Also USB standards are 5V. I would of still wired your TomTom in as suggested it is a great suggestion. However I would of got a spare TomTom car charger and embedded that in your fuse box bay.
