How old is my version?

I've got 7.9 in my Tomtom Rider V2. Is this really old?

7.901 was released in October 2008. I'm not aware of a further release.

ok, so is that the OS version or is that the maps? I assume current maps can still be purchased my tomtom for this unit, correct?

That is the operating system version. The latest map is 845 for the Rider 2 and to my understanding the model is not an orphan, meaning if and when any of us live long enough to see the overdue 850 maps made available, you'll be able to purchase them.
