On mine, I have to hold the power button down for several seconds. I'm sure you've tried that, but just wanted to toss it out as a possibility? Have you tried to reset the unit?

Had the exact same problem this am after doing an update.

Soft reset solved the problem instantly

With the TomTom powered on, use a paper clip to push the recessed button on the bottom of the unit.

This is a long shot, did you change the splash screen? I changed mine and it worked fine when plugged into the computer but would not start when unplugged. It would continue running if turned on while plugged in. I put back the original splash screen and it worked fine. I use a Mac and I realized I didn't turm off the preview and icon option on the image when I created it. Rewrote the file with out the icon and preview enbeded and it worked fine.

With mine, it stopped being able to be turned on when I started using an SD Card in it. If I pop the card out, it will turn on, then I pop the card back in. When it is plugged in, I can turn it on whether it's got an SD Card in it or not.
Is this normal? (The card is a 150x ATP Pro Max 2gig.)
[EDIT- Reset via the button on the bottom of the unit, and it powers on and off correctly now!)

Another thing I noticed is with another card (Kingston 2gb - no idea what speed) the GPS seems to update my position slower than it does if I am not using a SD card. Anyone else experience this? I just put the 2gig ATP in, and haven't tested it out on the road yet - but I am hoping that since it is a 150x speed card, it won't lag like the other card.

Another question, in TomTom Home there is the option to copy documents to the XL-S, but I cannot find the icon on the GPS in order to view it. Is that option not available on the XL-S? (If not, it really shouldn't be available to select... :( ) It would be handy to have a book or something loaded on there for the times where my wife takes forever in the store and I am left waiting in the truck... :)
