Hi new to this forum, hope I am in the right place.
Yesterday my 520 Go refused to connect to my PC. I tries a soft reset and even a factory reset, but to no avail. The usb lead shows the green "charging" light but nothing else. I tried a different usb lead and a different PC. The tom tom does not show up under Windows Device Manager and the usual sound that plays when connecting a usb device to my PC does not play.
The Tom Tom itself still works but I can not restore or update it.
I feel the operating system may be corrupt, can it be re installed somehow seeing as I can not connect to my PC?
Any help appreciated,
Dave

Dave, re-boot the computer and try using a different mini USB lead as it sounds like this might be whats at fault, do you have a full back up of the device prior to this issue as there are other options open to you if you have a backup - Mike

have tried that Mike, I have a back up on my PC but can not connect,

BTW thanks for speedy reply.
Dave

As you have a backup on the PC do you have a spare SD or SDHC memory card? if so copy the contents of the backup to the memory card and insert that to the device, for updates/ alterations use the card in a card reader, this negates the need to use the device directly coupled to the PC - Mike

Mike have done that but it seems to make no differance. Can you make Tom tom boot from back up, or can you delete operating system and re-install from card ?.
Will leave it 'till tomorrow anyway, Wallender is on shortly,
Thanks again
dave

With a full backup installed to the memory card your device will boot from the card and use whatever is stored on it, the internal memory might as well be dead (we have used this work around in the past when the flkash memory has died as its cheaper than a new device) Was your backup taken using TomTom Home or Windows Explorer - Mike

Put your backup onto the memory card, then extract this file to the memory card (overwriting as prompted). Does that start up now?

Also, check to make sure there's no dirt in the USB jack in the Tomtom.

Hi MVL,
I tried what you suggested but no luck. There is now 368 Mg on the card, but it still will not connect to PC. BTW the unit is actually working at the moment, but without PC connection, it's future is bleak.
As you mentioned, I checked the USB jack on the Tom Tom and it does look a little worn. I cleaned it as best I could and as it charges ok, I guess it must be working,
BTW does a Tom Tom automatically boot from a card if one is installed rather that it's internal memory?
Many thanks for your interest from a country just coming out of a freeze, we are not used to snow in Ireland.

When the TomTom boots up it checks for a memory card, if it find one it looks for the Navcore software on the memory card if it finds it it uses this by default, if the memory card isn't inserted or doesn't contain the Navcore software the device then boots from the built in Flash memory.

You can get the Navcore software and install it to your memory card by following the instructions and link mvl posted earlier in the thread - Mike

Hi Mike,
I just re inserted the card into my PC to check it's contents and guess what, it launcher Tom Tom Home and updated it self. When I put card back in Tom Tom it failed to connect to the PC. . I am now left with two possibilities, ( I think),
1 the Tom Tom itself is not reading the card,
2 the usb connection is not being made to PC, despite in charging ok.
The main advantage of the 520 for me is the FM transmitter as I have lots of music on cards that I play when driving. The most modern versions, ( in Ireland), do not have this.
You have got me this far, have you any final thoughts on what I might try ?
Thanks again for you interest.

With the card in the device what does the device do when its switch on and NOT connected to the PC - Mike

Mike it makes no difference whether the Tom Tom is connected to the PC, it gived thye same start up- splash screen -legal notice and it's on. It's definitely booting from card as it now shows my full list of Favorites and my added points of interest but only with card inserted.
If the processor can cope with directions AND playing music I will be OK, not ideal but ok. Maybe you have saved me upgrading for a while.
Thanks
Dave

Good, if its working OK, for any updates just use a card reader with the memory card removed from the device, you will be able to use the Memory card for the application, maps and music with no problems, remember the device will support up to (and including) 32GB SDHC which is more than enough for a couple of maps and lots of music, just make sure you go for a class 6 card as these are the fastest - Mike

Brilliant Mike,
The Boston crowd always looked after the Irish. just took a short trip and Navigation worked fine while music played. I just need a bigger card,
thanks again,
