1. Attempted upgrade to version 8.10.

2. Upgrade successful but when I rebooted it said I couldn't use my map. Couldn't get any further.

3. Tried a restore from a backup through HOME. Failed on copying a .bmp file.

4. Deleted files from device root.

5. Manually copied contents of InternalMemory folder in backup directory to device root.

6. Restarted device, get the picture of the device, then an animation of the SD card coming out and a rex "X" over it. I take out the SD card, it shows an animation of the SD card going back in...endless loop. Device won't go any further.

7. Funny thing is I can "Operate my GO" through Home. It is just having trouble booting.

Any ideas? thanks.

Would suggest using Home to remove items from my go and remove the firmware. Then download and reinstall the firmware again. The red 'x' is because the unit isn't recognizing the operating system.

Hopefully this link helps and you are able to open it.
http://www.tomtom.com/support/solution.php?GID=1&PID=1682&SID=0&CID=215&Language%20=4&FID=6363

Didnt insert the link correctly last time

Link goes to...

"Unfortunately due to a problem, we cannot serve you the information you requested. Please try again in a few moments."

That figures.

What does the directory structure look like for the Internal Memory? I have all the files sitting in the root directory, is this correct, or is there a subdirectory they go into?

Another intresting tidbit is when I launch HOME and you get to the screen where you select internal memory or memory card....both options say "memory card"....not "internal memory". But, it still launches fine.

I apologize about link...
I went to Tomtom website->support, selected All in One Navigation, then selected TT720 as the device. Selected the topic Upgrades/Update. In the FAQ section, there is a link the red 'X' problem.

Now when I checked the website again, it seems like this FAQ dosent exist anymore. Sorry for the trouble.

I tried pasting the contents of the webpage, but unfortunately I am not sure how to embed the pictures in between.

Somebody with a 920 had a similar problem and deleting a file "CLMDATA" using the Windows explorer seems to have fixed the issue. Seems like this is some file created at startup.

OR

This is an email that one of the TT user got from TT Customer care for a similar issue:

In this email you will find the solution for the error on your TomTom. This solution can be used in the following situations:

• The device hangs in the start screen (splash screen)
• An SD-card with a red cross is displayed on the screen
• A picture with a red dot and white cross is displayed
• The device can’t be turned off

If you haven't already done so, please download and Install TomTom Home from http://www.tomtom.com/7602

If you don’t have a full backup of your TomTom yet we advise you to make one before continuing with the steps in this email. You can make a backup by following the steps below:

1. Reset your TomTom device: http://www.tomtom.com/6965 and connect it to your computer.
2. Click on 'Backup and Restore -> Backup' in TomTom Home 2.0
3. Enter a name for the backup and click [OK]
• IMPORTANT: When the software is asking to delete parts from the backup click [NO]

After the backup is made you delete the files from the root directory of the TomTom. Follow the steps below to do this:

1. Reset your TomTom device: http://www.tomtom.com/6965 and connect it to your computer.
2. Open My Computer in Windows, or Finder in Macintosh from your desktop and turn on your TomTom device.
3. On your screen a new removable disk appears, this is your TomTom device, click on the disk to open it.
4. You will see a list of folders and a list of loose files
5. Delete all of the loose files. IMPORTANT: The folders with their content must NOT be deleted.
5. Close the window when all files are deleted by clicking on the [x].

Next we will reinstall the application via TomTom HOME.

1. Start TomTom HOME on your computer
• TomTom Home should automatically check for updates and prompt you to install them, if not:-
2. Click on 'Update my device'. If you get the message 'No Items Available', or there is not an application to download, click on 'Add Maps, Traffic, Voices etc -> Items on my computer', select the application and click on 'Add'.
3. Select the Application update.
4. Click on 'Device -> Disconnect Device', then turn off your device when it is done installing and disconnect it from your computer.
5. On a PC, in the System Tray by the computer clock, click on the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon and disconnect the TomTom also in this way.

When switching on the device it should boot as normal again.

You might want to read through this posting on another forum regarding the 'Red Cross' problem:

http://www.yournav.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=11730

As the problem seems to be because of a corrupted system file, others have suggested this route:

- Connect the TomTom to the computer. Shut down Home if it starts.
- Using Windows Explorer, delete all of the files that are NOT in folders. Don't delete any folders!
- Start up Home, and it will reinstall the latest firmware.

Hopefully, this time the will be no corrupt files.

Replaced all files not in folders..restarted and came up fine.

I will not be upgrading to 8 as it said it won't work with my map. Thanks!

Glad to hear it is working. NOW, make a complete backup of the unit using Explorer, not Home. Make sure hidden files are showing as well as extensions for known file types.

I'll do that thanks! Any idea why I can't upgrade to 8? I have version 7.15 maps.
