Hi all -

Ok...tried to be a good noob, spent 2 hours looking for answer...need help please! Saw a few posts that skirted the question a bit...

Here's my situation - Have a 720. Downloaded new North American 1.7GB map.

Went to HOME, tried to install...it says not enough room, you must make space. I marked the 1.2GB N. America map for deletion, but it won't let me continue...until I delete ANOTHER 421mb. Here's the problem, if I mark every single item available in HOME for deletion, it is only another 140.3mb!

Is this as simple as I need an SD card to put in the slot that says "SD card not required"??!! Or, am I doing something horribly wrong? If it is a need for SD card, and I only need North America, what size SD is recommended?

Thanks! I am already glad I found this forum...those european instructions are not the best!!

I just opened my box this evening as well.

What I did before I DL'd the NA 7.10 map was to remove the Audio books for 6.05 megs. I deleted the Demo Video for 20 megs. And I think I deleted some other crap as well. Just go into My Computer and you will see the TT there...look \through the files and you can see there is lots that could be done without.

Then I went to file/latest map garantee on TT home and hit the button. same as you. It told me to remove 2.1Mb and that was it...now DL'ing the map and it is gonna take one heck of a long time...3+ hours on WiFi in my house. Whoa..!

C ya in the AM..!!

Been there, done that and have the T-shirt!:)

I did NOT have an SD card then but that would be my first choice now. A second, more involved (but it works) method is to go into the zip file of the map stored on your hard drive, remove the cspeech_state_.dat files for states you don't think you'll ever drive in (for example, Texas is over 40 megs in size) and then try the install.

Thanks. So, while I am a fairly technical person, I would prefer an SD over deleting files that I may later regret (potential to drive in ALL states...) So, NOW my question is this - if I need to free up 421mb, would a 512mb SD do it? In other words, will it load part of the 1.7gb map on the hard drive, and the spillover on the SD? Or, do I need to get a 2GB SD?

Thanks again to all

No, it won't split. I'd go for a 2 gig card.

Are you still able to access the data stored on internal memory even if you're running the maps from an SD card? Can you use internal memory for music, pics etc?

I just got my 720 last night. Installed HOME on my PC, let automatic updates happen, made a backup, then did the "latest map guarantee" thing for the NA 1.7 GB map. Took about an hour to download and copy. I don't understand why you have to delete anything??? I don't remember doing that.

I was in this exact position with my 720, and I just used a 2g SD card to install the new map on. It worked great. Just remember, then you have to go into "manage maps" and choose the new map on your SD card.

I thought I did the same....but learned that while I had DOWNLOADED the new map, and the download screen says it is "installing" the new map, it is actually only installing on your computer hard drive. You need to go into HOME, click manage maps, then something like add maps (don't have my TomTom with me). When you select this, it will tell you you need to delete to make room for it. So, I'm guessing you did the same as me and assumed you now had the new map, but actually don't have it on your TT yet...

Ok. I am right in the middle of "installing". find this file on my HD - open it up - clear or c/p into a backup folder those CSpeech_Dat files for those states I will not likely ever visit ( I'm in Canada but do go to the US from time to time). Then once I have the total file shrunk somewhat to about 1.6 - place current NA_ 2Gb file onto desktop and replace with New NA 7.10.

Ok think I got my pea brain wrapped around this now.

Update: the install program put this new map right on to my SD card...now mind you I had changed the destination from TTom to the SD. SD Now sitting at 1.7 GB full. I guess i can now switch the files. Old map to Desktop and new map from SD to TTom.

that should free up the SD for mp3 and phone contact data..??

Thanx

Not sure, but I don't think there is a way to fit 7.10 map on 720 HD without a lot of selective deleting. I don't think it's an issue if it resides on SD as long as you DELETE (after backing up of course...) the "old" 1.2GB map. In essence, this should free up 1.2GB for MP3's, etc.

Which English do you speak?

I'm a bit confused about something....
I see reference to deleting speech files for states you may not visit in the 1.7g NA map.
What are these speech files? Do they speak a different language in each state of the USA?
I speak the same English everywhere and I've been across the country many times and everyone seems to understand me, except in NY where they say I sound like I'm from "Alabama or some sh*t" which I'm not :p

Why is there a speech file for each state in the 1.7g map and not in the smaller one or the USA_Canada map which seem to be able to tell me what i need to know regardless of what state I'm in?

I just think its how TT organizes the files that relate to street and city name pronunciation.

So if you take them out the TTS won't be able to read street and city names and will instead just say turn left or right like a non TTS voice?

Make sure you have no other files IE: MP3, pictures and text files.

A couple of weeks ago I had the experience of getting all three maps from Tomtom from the small 900mb, medium 1.7gb and the bigger file 1.9gb I noticed that some people even though they downloaded the 1.7gb file they received the 1.9gb file by mistake. In my case I ended up installing all three versions and had no problems installing the 900mb and the 1.7gb file to the internal memory however, I did have to use an sd card for the 1.9gb file.
I ended up buying a 4gig SDHC card for 40 bucks at office max and it works great. Some people have also posted that they have had success with an 8gb SDHC card. Hope this help you out.

Pretty sure the voice files are the different voices...Suzie, Kathy, etc, et al.

Some people try to get the new 1.7GB to fit without getting an SD card. To do this, they delete some of the extra voices - and POI's for states (not voices per state...pretty sure).

I spent $19 at Best Buy, bought a 2GB SD card and didn't worry about selectively deleting anything. Works great!

Good luck!

According to Tomtom the1.7gb with speech is really meant for the go 720T and the Go 920 but with a quick hack or mod you can get the go 720 to enable that feature.
The only setback is that you can't get the file to fit because in reality it's not 1.7gb it's more like 1.9gb. The go 720T features 4gb of internal memory and a traffic antenna
