Hello everyone! I just discovered these forums the other day when I was searching for a solution to a problem I was having on my XL 340 S Live (the same day I bought it, no less).
I first became a TomTom owner in mid-2008. It was a basic TomTom One, and I liked it a lot. I'm not the greatest navigator in the world, and having the TomTom really came in handy. Even for familiar destinations, the TomTom helped me find faster routes I never considered. My TomTom One and I were getting along great until last year when I foolishly left it in my car overnight and awoke to find my TomTom was missing (along with the window in the driver's side door of my car). There's a reason why the TomTom displays a picture of a burglar when you turn it off.
So, I went through the rest of the year TomTomless. My cell phone has turn by turn capabilities which I used when I was going someplace unfamiliar. One thing I can't stand about my Cellphone is it's instruction to "Make a U-Turn" which it would repeat over and over and over again until I made one. Plus, for long road trips you want something a bit better then your cellphone.
So, I decided to look into buying something to replace my old TomTom One. I went to Best Buy and saw the TomTom XL 340 S Live on sale for only $120.00 US. I decided to give it a try. That night, while I was updating it's map, it seemed to stall when it was copying the map data into the TomTom. So, I decided to abort and try again. This lead to the "no maps found!" message which I see isn't that uncommon with that model.
Frustrated, but determined to solve the problem, I searched for help. I came across this form and saw a few posts dealing with that issue. Some of the advice people were giving dad to do with reformatting the entire TomTom and letting the Home software reinstall everything from scratch.
I didn't do that. Instead I found some steps on TomTom's official site which involved just deleting the map folder (directory) on the TomTom. Which I did. I then was able to re-download the map and I waited patiently while the TomTom Home copied the map data into the TomTom. Now, everything seems to be working fine.
Looking forward to contributing on the forms and learning new tricks. I am hoping to make extensive use of my TomTom this summer as I visit some old friends who live out of state.
