Hi there, I am SO happy to find this forum. Nobody has better info on a device than those who use them - and share!
I am a software geek and travel a lot throughout North America. I got really tired of printing Mapquest maps and getting lost anyway cause who can look at a map while navigating around a strange city? Now I just plug in my destination and go. Maybe it's not the best possible route, but so far it has gotten me where I need to be, so who really cares?
I got my TomTom ONE XL in the fall of 2008. It was a refurb, which normally wouldn't matter but in my case, the previous owner had used up the map update so I was out of luck. With my busy season coming up I want to update my maps ($$$) and decided to make the jump to using an SD card. But what size? What kind? A search on your forums answered this nicely - no SDHC allowed, unless I want to go outside the recommended processes. I continually deal with clients who want to push the limits of the software I deal with, so I shudder at the thought. Yes, it can be done, but ... well maybe I am just a chicken in disguise. I guess that to me it's a tool, I want it to work for me without elaborate measures to maintain it. If I want newer features, I'll wait til I can upgrade to a newer model.
Thanks for the advice to back up to my hd with explorer. I have backed up using Home but nice to have the security of an extra that I can find if I need it.
I have tried various voices, but have settled on C3PO, who is mistakenly identified on the Home site as R2D2. When I decide to go my own way instead of following directions, it says "Oh Deahhh". It's very amusing. My grandson loves this voice also and always wants the "little computer map" set up whenever we go somewhere together.
My funniest experience so far was in El Paso, TX where my tomtom took me to the commercial cargo area of the airport at 5 am. Very funny, tomtom! Fortunately I just had to drive around the perimeter of the airport to find the right entrance for pedestrian travellers!
So, thank you much for being here, and I look forward to many miles with my Tomtom!
