TT1 3rd Edition
I just bought a TT1 3rd edition and have a question. Is there a way to download names and addresses of local residents that may be listed in a public phone book/directory?

Let's say I want to travel to a friend's house that's not too far from my own home. I obviously know his name, but only have a rough idea of where he lives (don't know the exact address) and want to use my TT to find his house. Is there a way I can download a public phone book (like a phone company public directory) onto my TT and find my friend's address by typing his name into my TT1 until the TT recognizes it?

Hope this makes sense. Thank you.

Unfortunately, I think that you're hoping for too much here.

Seems to me that would be a natural feature for a GPS unit. I know the data would be out of date the moment you downloaded it from somewhere but wouldn't it be nice if you could download your city or state's phone book, store it on your TT, then look up an address by name and have TT show you the way there? If it were available, I would buy it for at least the three largest counties in northern Utah. Maybe there's just not enough demand for it.

Maybe he didn't tell you the address because he doesn't want you to visit him at home? Afterall, I know Halle Berry's name, but do you think she wants me to know her home address? Seriously.

US phone books list people's addresses?? Really? That can't be true.

So, If I overhear a friend of yours calling your name, or I read it off your name tag, I can find your home phone number and your address?

Yes, for stalkers.

Maybe there's just not enough demand for it.
Or perhaps some people like having privacy and the freedom to choose whom they tell their home address to?

This can batch convert addresses into coordinates. Save as a GPX file, use POIEdit to convert to TomTom OV2 POI format.
Does it help ?

Hey Zell,

Apologies if my response came across harshly, it was meant to be jokey. I know my Halle Berry / Stalker analogies were OTT, but I wanted to highlight what I saw as serious shortcomings of the idea that you proposed.

A serious analogy would have been that of a potential burglar. He picks a random name, calls to check you're out, then navigates to your home and steals your TV.

I think most people can appreciate that there are potential problems with the idea that you proposed. Although it would be useful for you, it would also be a fantastic benefit to a variety of criminals.

Personally, If I have not told someone my home address, I don't want them dropping by and 'surprising' me. I made the assumption (never a good idea I know) that other people feel the same way. Freedom of choice is something that I take very seriously. I reserve the right to keep certain things private.

I really did not intend to offend you personally (I guess I did. I never received a negative rating before!). I agree, it was a valid question. I hope that you can appreciate my viewpoint, even if you did not like the way that I expressed it in my last post.

The short answer to your original question is 'No'. It is not possible.
