I have a TomTom 930.

Recently, I also received a hand-me-down TomTom 910 from a relative. The TomTom 910 appears to be working, but is no longer needed because they bought a new car with built-in GPS.

I'm wondering, which is better?

From what I could see, the TomTom 910 has much larger storage space. However, it is older, even after I upgraded the software with TomTom HOME it still remains on version 6 (I forgot the exact version number). My TomTom 930 is on version 8, which is newer.

They appear to work about the same. The TomTom 910 can receive RDS-TMC traffic, through the same cable as my existing 930, which is nice (although it plugs into the 910's windshield mount and not to the GPS itself, so it can't be used without the windshield mount).

The 930 has the nice 3-D traffic display that works at all times. The 910, however, doesn't have the display, it just has arrows. I'm on the right map, I believe. What's strange is that I can see the traffic display sometimes when I use the menu feature to browse the route turn-by-turn. The TomTom 910 doesn't display it during the normal driving view, though!

One thing I don't like about the TomTom 910 is the weight. It is dangerously top heavy. I wouldn't trust it to stay mounted when driving.

Any recommendations?

If you mean the normal 3d DRIVING display (as opposed to 'Traffic') then that is easily sorted. It is an option in the preferences menu.

It may be in a different place on the 910, but on recent models it is in Safety Preferences - Turn off Map Display - Always/Above certain speed/Never

The 910 was a great device in its day but times have moved on and your 930 will outperform it in most (if not all) ways possible. You mention the 20GB storage space on the 910, great idea but spinning hard drives in a car being bounced around don't tend to last too long. If you want more storage space in your 930 pop an SDHC card in to it as it will support anything up to and including 32GB in capacity.

The 930 has the FM Tx built in to the device, for the FM Tx to work with the 910 you needed a special mount with the transmitter in the mount (rather rare bit of hardware these days). The mount on the 910 was a real PITA, falling off the screen, drooping, poor conectivity to the device through the contact strip - Stick with your 930 if I were you - Mike

Thanks! Yes, I meant the normal 3D driving display, had a thinko there.

I needed to turn off the "feature" where it hides the helpful 3D map, that places everything in context, and replaces the screen with just a single arrow, leaving you effectively blinded.

It's the same as the ALG "feature" they introduced in newer software: really bad, right when you need it the most, it cuts out the normal moving display and replaces it with a nearly-useless static display. One of the first things I turn off!

Good to know that. Spinning hard drives in portable devices are a really bad idea to begin with: remember the iPod Classic that everybody used to own about 5-10 years ago, and how almost none of them still work.

As soon as I saw the mount, I was skeptical. That thing is a safety hazard. No way could it support the GPS, especially an awkward topheavy device like the 910. My previous mount's glue had ripped off, so had a choice to make: reglue the 930 or switch to the 910. I'm glad I decided to stay with the 930!

Did you know that when ALG kicks in, a single tap anywhere on the screen will get rid of the Reality View image and return you to the normal driving view?
