Hi guys.

I'm a brand-new owner of the TomTom XL335.S

I would like to transfer directions that I have saved on my laptop in Google Maps onto my TT, but don't have a clue if this is even possible.

Can anyone help me? By the way, I use Firefox, not Explorer.

Thanks.
B.

So we're clear - are you wanting to transfer "directions" (routing) or just specific locations that you had stored? You can't force your TomTom to use your old routes, but there are ways to get your old Google locations stored in your TomTom.

Congratulations and welcome.

Before you are doing anything to your device, please make a complete backup with Windows Explorer, not HOME, to a new folder on your computer.

Hi,

I don't transfer a route, but just locations, and let the GPS figure out how to get there. You just right clock on a location ballon and send to GPS tomtom. Your tomtom has to be connected. Hope you enjoy your GPS. One thing good about tomtom is the customization you can do.

Thanks.......

Thanks to all of you who posted solutions for me. Of course, ever since I posted my problem, I haven't had time to sit down and play with the TomTom. I hope to do that tomorrow.

The thing I want to do with the TomTom is chart specific directions to a place I go every year. I know how to get there and exactly the route I want to take. This TomTom is a gift for my friend, and when I give it to her, I'd like those directions to already be in the TomTom.

She's not very good with directions or technical stuff :) So, I'm trying to make it really easy for her.

My friend will be driving to our vacation spot the day after me, so I won't be in the car with her, telling her which way to go.

Thanks again for all your suggestions,
B.

The problem with planning a route in Google and then transferring it as an itinerary to Tomtom is that when the time comes, the unit WILL go to every waypoint designated (you are allowed 48/itinerary) but it may not select the same routing as you originally had in mind.

Adding more waypoints will 'force' TomTom NOT to waver from the selected roads in getting from point A to B, B to C, etc. along the way.

I personally prefer using Google Maps.com over using the Google maps through Tyre .
With Google maps .com you can click on the route and drag it where you want to go if it isn't the route from A-B that Google selects. ( Just make sure you zoom in before dropping the rout in a north bound lane on a four lane Hwy when you actually are wanting to go south )

Once you have the route where you want to go click on the link on the top right corner of the Google map page and copy the link . Then go to to this link and past your link then with your tom tom connected to TT Home click submit query. (When you save this you might want to name something like my Cottage)

Then go into your change preferences then to Planning Preferences (4 pages over ) click on IQ routes and disable for this route. ( This should stop your TT from changing the route you created in Google)

After it has down loaded to your ITN folder just open your Itinerary folder on your tt click on options then load your new itinerary.

Hope this helps!

I have done it this way for a few routs that are over 800 miles.

Unless you decided on specific directions because you think it is scenic why not put the final address in and let her drive to it by the way TomTom decides.
If there is not much difference, add your destination into Favourite, also set her home address as Home.

You can easily check on your computer with HOME if TomTom's choice is much different from yours.
Select Prepare route A .. B, enter the address from which she will start her drive and and the place where you will vacation. When it shows the route, click on Details, and Browse map of route
to see what TomTom selected.
Keep in mind that options like Fastest route and No Motorways may influence the selection

Are you talking about Google maps in TYRE ore are you talking about Google maps straight.
The only thing I can transfer from Google maps to the GPS is itineraries.

There are ways to do it, but in order to help you more efficiency, we need more info from you.
1. How long of the distance of the trip from your friend home to yours?
2. Is (are) there any specific location(s) you want your friend passes by? If yes, then how many?

The main reason I like to take my own route when I am traveling from Home to Florida is that tomtom will take you through New York City and if it is at rush hour that can be hairey. I have traveled DV parkway & 401 E-W many times at rush hour and don't care for it. that is why i drag my route to a different Interstate.
