TomTom Model(s)
go730, XL
After reading various forum posts about sleep mode, I've come to the conclusion that it's not possible to shut a TomTom down completely in an easy manner, and when I boot into the info screen it lists 'startup mode' as 'sleep'.
A couple of days ago I picked up an XL, and after sorting a few issues with some corrupt files I decided to look at its startup mode. It says 'power down'.
This leads me to thinking that it's possible to change this setting, but I don't see how.

Any thoughts?

As far as I know, the newer models DO have both 'sleep' and 'off' buttons. Older models such as the one you refer to do not. I believe the 'off' in those models is like turning a TV 'off' where, in fact, it is still drawing power.

But I could be wrong ........

No, you have it right, dhn. Way back in the day, the devices went into a deep sleep mode where they were just barely running while they retained the most recent ephemeris data for a period of time. Then they would eventually shut down entirely to avoid running the battery down too low.
