Hi All,

I have just purchased a GO 730 and am pretty happy with it so far with the exception of the Latest Map Guarantee. I have downloaded the latest map but during he installation onto the satnav it throws up an error and won't let me install (will paste the text tomorrow). I have tried several times including connecting to the internet using an ethernet cable rather than my wireless connection and re-downloading the map several tiimes but to no avail. Can anyone make any other suggestions of what I can do or try before I give up and return it?

cheers

Welcome to this side of the pond, mate!

You can install the new map without Home (which many refer to as the Devils' work, anyway ...:) )

1. Make a complete Explorer, not Home, backup of your unit's contents. Ensure hidden files/folders are showing.

2. Go to the location of your downloaded map. you'll find it in this location:
C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\My Documents \ TomTom\HOME\Downloads\complete\ map\Western_Europe

It's a cab (compressed) file. [Your map may be named slightly different]

3. Within the compressed cab file, if you look at the contents, you should see a Western_Europe.zip file, perhaps a couple of .gif files, a Western_Europe.toc file and, importantly, an activation_map.cab file.

4. Use Winrar and extract the contents of the Western_Europe.zip file into the current Western_Europe map folder on your unit.

5. Then, extract the file in the activation.cab file into the same Western_Europe map folder on your unit. You don't need to worry about the other files.

6. Make another Explorer backup of the unit's contents to a different folder on your computer.

7. Disconnect the unit PROPERLY from the computer using the Safely Disconnect icon in your notification area of your desktop.

You are done!

Hi!

Thanks for the prompt response.

Just wanted to let you know that I have now sorted my issues. I started from scratch and un-installed Home then re-installed it. Then re-downloaded the latest map which happily installed. No idea why it didn't work before.

Having been on a few forums just before and when I bought the Go730 the first thing I did was make and Explorer back-up - probably the best bit of advice for any TomTom user!

Anyway, justed wanted to say thanks.

I've got a similar issue.

Just got a new go 720, downloaded and installed the 830 north america map via HOME, then discovered the unit had a bad bluetooth unit in it and had to exchange for another new one.

new one comes and tried to go to "latest map guarantee" in HOME and it tells me "your unit already has the latest map" but it still has the 710 map (not the 830)

since I still had the 830 map downloaded onto my PC

I followed the steps listed above.
backup, extract zip, extract cab, proper disconnect and whatnot.

BUT the unit then just gets stuck on the splash screen trying to boot.

anyone have any suggestions?

Did you try a pin reset?

Also, try uninstalling the application and reinstalling.

Pin reset will get it to turn off but it still gets stuck trying to boot.

I really wish the TT would display some kind of error/status or boot progress instead of just showing the splash...

I manually restored the backup back to the orig app version 7.something and map
tried the manual map install -> stuck at boot
sync to HOME
download and install the latest app version -> still stuck at boot.
delete manually installed 830 map and copy back 710 map -> works fine (but still want the new map...)

Is there something else besides that 1 file from the .cab file that HOME is doing now with the 830 map
during installation to get it to work ?

Is there any settings or something I can reset in HOME to make it forget that i've already downloaded the 830 map once before? (I already moved the NA2gb folder from my tomtom/downloads ,or whatever it is, area)

UPDATE: looks like i'm not the only one having this same issue other thread guess I'll have to call up TT support. I'll post another update here if I get a working answer from them.

May be part of the map anti-piracy included in Tomtoms. You can't copy maps from one device to another.

Call Tomtom phone support, they can add and activate map 830 for your replacement device.
