TomTom Model(s)
GO 5100 ~ GO Classic
A longstanding issue - maps not updated for 44 months, despite some sporadic effort.

Due to out of date map issues on a journey recently (don't ask) I bought a new GO classic
(which updates fine via WiFi, and got all the "my places" from the 5100 account
automatically after logging in with the same email and password) and it also connects
without issue through mydrive connect, if needed.

So I used the same new tomtom usb lead on the same computer, and my old Go5100 and
it still doesn't connect.

Visual inspection of the usb socket on the go5100 shows five shiny connection strips,
using a magnifying glass and lots of light. So that's presumably OK.
The usb socket isn't used in the normal use of the 5100 as it clips into a magnetic
backplate/mount and the power connection is via that, not the usb socket.

Earlier this week I gave the 5100 a factory reset, which I had been asked to on previous
attempts to resolve the problem some years ago, but didn't as I envisaged it becoming
a doorstop. However, when I tried it this week I was amazed that it not only came back
OK with the (old) map still working and it even fetched all my places back via its 2/3G
cellular connection.
It still didn't work with mydrive connect, or show up in windows device manager
(Go classic appears as ndis device in the network adapters)

The one thing which is odd, and was raised by me previously but was dismissed is that
the Go5100 shows as a Go5000 on my drive connect (serial number is correct).

Anyway, I know the 5100 is on borrowed time, it's old and out of production and the
2/3G cellular data connection is stopping relatively soon which will render it totally useless.
Traffic is primarily what my satnav is used for these days, as long as the road is somewhere
near where it used to be...

Can anyone help?

Regards,

JohnH510

Your GO 5100 has lifetime device maps
To connect your GO to Mydrive connect for updates you must connect the USB socket directly to your GO
Do not connect your GO to the car holder.

The one thing which is odd, and was raised by me previously but was dismissed is that
the Go5100 shows as a Go5000 on my drive connect (serial number is correct).

It is normal the GO 5000 and the GO 5100 have the same serial number.

@Willy875 Thank you for your reply.

Yes, connected for updates via the usb socket, not via the car mount.
My original comment above:

"Visual inspection of the usb socket on the go5100 shows five shiny connection strips,
using a magnifying glass and lots of light. So that's presumably OK.
The usb socket isn't used in the normal use of the 5100 as it clips into a magnetic
backplate/mount and the power connection is via that, not the usb socket"

was to try and show that the usb socket I am using to attempt connection/update is not obviously damaged.

My comment about serial number was to show that it is my 5100 I am trying
to connect to (despite mydrive connect showing the wrong model) - it is the serial number of my 5100.

I would expect serial numbers to be unique.

Try with another Tomtom cable
A Tomtom cable has 4 wires, two to charge your GPS and two to transfer data from the computer.

@Willy875

I've tried a number of different cables in the past without success, and as mentioned in my original post, this time I used a brand new tomtom cable which came with the new go classic - and that cable works with the go classic and thus the computer is also good too.

Hi there @Johnh510 -

When my GO 5100 is connected to MyDrive Connect under “MY DEVICES”, it shows GO 5100, then below, the S/N: QR……, and then Model: GO 5000, so you should have no issues with updating maps/cameras.
On a number of occasions when my GO 5100 failed to download/waiting for device or even failed to see it, another recommendation was to also go to the MyDrive Connect settings cogwheel (top right) and under “DOWNLOADS”, untick “Download updates to my computer (recommended). This would then download straight to the device, bypassing any likelihood of Internet security issues via my mac.

With regards to your particular issue, occasionally I would also have to “trick” the GO 5100 as MyDrive Connect was still waiting for device or failed to see it, leaving it connected after a few moments, then removing the lead at the back of the device, after 5 seconds then connecting it again -or- whilst still connected, a quick tap on the power button to put into sleep, wait a couple of seconds, then power on again which would then show the 5100 as “Connected“. Have you also tried a different USB port at the rear of the PC as that can sometimes help?

@Johnh510

If your GPS is not recognized by Mydrive connect what you can do.

Find MyDrive connect in the list, select it, then click Uninstall.
Restart the computer.
Reinstall MyDrive Connect.

It could also be that the mini socket on the GPS side is a problem?

I tried uninstalling mydrive connect, and went through deleting all the files, folders and registry entries it left behind using file explorer and regedit.

Rebooted, then reinstall mydrive connect.

As before the go5100 still doesn't connect, despite using the new tomtom usb A to usb B cable and a variety of different sockets on the computer. The new new go classic continues to connect using that cable.

I think it's reasonable to presume the usb b socket on the go5100 is defective in the data connection wiring.

I removed the go5100 device from mydrive connect, which looks to have been a one way trip as I can't get it back as it won't connect and the "add device" option visible initially, disappears without trace when selected.

In the mean time before traffic become useless, the go5100 still continues to work as it approaches it's 7th birthday in 3 days time, albeit with occasional loss of "traffic" coverage (already*), a virtually useless internal battery, and an odd feature of getting the destinations input to the go classic in real time - which could be an issue if Mrs johnh510 ever uses the go5100 in her car, unless we are going to the same place... I suppose a new account and move the go classic would (un)do it.

End of discussion, unless anyone knows better.

* according to the current "Computer Active", Vodaphone have already started to switch off in Basingstoke and Plymouth, EE plans to follow early next year, and Three says deactivated by the end of next year. O2 hasn't confirmed its plans.

Hi - it’s true that Vodaphone in the U.K. are switching off the 3G mobile signal in Basingstoke & Plymouth in February 2023 and fully by December 2023, but your GO 5100 has a Vodaphone 2G sim and that signal is not likely to be shut down anytime soon (their website states by 2033). Sorry to hear the above responses to your issue were not resolvable.
