TomTom Model(s)
go 5000 go exclusive 7"
I am not a big iPhone user and have not activated Bluetooth. On a normal journey from home to a my places destination what features if any won’t be working?

You must connect your phone via Bluetooth to receive Tomtom services.

If you do not activate you will not have information on traffic and you will not be alerted in the event of a speed camera on your route.

Looks like I bought the wrong one for me - curses - my old 5000 did not need that - I did not notice there was no SIM card in the new one

None of TomTom's consumer devices newer than a GO 5x00 or 6x00 has cellular capability.

Ok - I just went out for a play - still no Bluetooth set up - but I got alerts when approaching speed cameras and speeding warning too. Tom Tom was showing no internet - no WiFi - no traffic - and Bluetooth not set up - so how is it getting the speed camera info?

have not set up any Bluetooth or any other connection to my phone how is the Tom Tom getting my speed and giving me all the camera alerts
You must configure your GPS to your phone's Bluetooth to receive real-time traffic and speed camera alerts.

This is what is confusing me - I have NOT connected in any way to my phone but I AM receiving speed camera alerts - how is it doing this?

IIRC, fixed cam data embedded in the map data.
Different than 'real time'.

- and updated by speed camera updates when the WiFi is activated ?? However there is real time data on my position and speed - must that be coming from the gps? So does that give the TT all it needs to produce the alerts and speed warning without having to use my phone?

Your position and speed is done by gps, not by wifi/data... On iPhone you also have to configure the Personal Hotspot in order to work together with the Go Exclusive.

The radars on the map are updated once a month so some radars will not be up to date.

It can be updated by means of several types of connections. Cellular for 5x00 and 6x00 devices. Or you can use WiFi and set your phone up as a WiFi hotspot. Or you can use Bluetooth and set your phone up as a Bluetooth hotspot. Or you can use Bluetooth and use the MyDrive app on your phone.

All of these connections are capable of delivering traffic information and delivering updated speed and red light cam info (if you have a valid subscription).

Your TomTom's location is derived from the GPS receiver in your TomTom. It doesn't use the GPS location data from your phone. So yes, the TomTom produces its own speed calculation based upon how fast your position is changing, so speed alerts (your speed vs. map speed) don't require your phone, either.

Thank you - however I am guessing I will only get the traffic alerts by setting up my phone?

You do not have the choice
Mobile data consumption is not huge.

Example:
On average, driving an hour a day during rush hour will use around 7MB of data per month.

The 'Live' traffic data is received in realtime, so your Exclusive needs a data connection of some kind back to the traffic server to get that information. That information is updated about every 2 minutes.

Unless you've got a vehicle that can supply its own WiFi hotspot (some do these days, if you believe the ads on the telly), your phone is the most logical solution, yes.

When you're at home, you can connect your Exclusive up to a home WiFi router if you're curious to see what the traffic looks like before you leave the house.

Ok understood. Many thanks. I have followed your advice on another thread and fired up WiFi hotspot on my phone so it’s there when I want it - I am getting traffic etc ok.
