TomTom Model(s)
920
Hi,

I actually got an offer to change for free my tomtom go 920 for a brand new GO 730... It's because I got one time a little problem with my 920( this was last summer and never append again ... so it's not really a big problem )

So is it a good idea to exchange my 920 for a 730 ?

Thank you

I wouldn't, the 920 and 930 are functionally equivalent. And the 720 and 730 are functionally equivalent. So you're basically getting a downgrade.

You'll lose EPT (tunnel location approximation), lose the bluetooth remote, have a smaller map storage capability, and lose access to the large POI map files.

The only reasons to consider swapping are:
- a new 730 would have a warranty, the 920 warranty may have run out
- a new 730 would have the LMG which gives you the latest map for free, however the 730 maps have limited POIs when compared to the 920 map.
- Tomtom doesn't offer the latest software upgrades to the earliest models (eg: the 910), currently the exact same software features are offered for the 920 and 930, but in the future tomtom might offer a free upgrade to the x30 series and not the x20 series.

I asked this, because I have an extended warranty on my gps, and I've got a little problem with it only one time.

And they not have de 920 anymore, and their warranty say : equivalent or higher model, so... the 730 is not equivalent... but they don't have the 930 in stock and they don't know when have this model .

My store is future shop ( in quebec city, canada ) it's an equivalent ( same company) to best buy.

I don't want to keep my 920 because I don't know when I will get this problem again ... but I don't want to downgrade .

My warranty is valid until summer 2010.

And on their website we can see the 930 but it's not avaible.

What is the best to do? Wait for a new model or the 930, or take the 730 ?

If you never plan to use the unit in Europe, then that's one reason that a 930 isn't so compelling. In and around Quebec, there are not many tunnels, etc., so the loss of EPT is another item that wouldn't be a great loss.

What I WOULD negotiate for, however, is a remote for the 730 (comes automatically with a 9x model) to be thrown in.

On the other hand, having 4 gigs internal storage (9x models) over 2 gigs (7x models) is a point in the 9x favour. Just because the 7x models can use additional storage on a sdhc card, the fact remains that with a 7x model, you'll always just get offered smaller maps that fit the 2 gig internal, even if you have more than that on a sdhc card to handle larger maps.

OK thank you for your fast answer.

For the remote I will try to keep mine.

And for map is it the same ? I mean is it the same quality? ( for N-A)

And for the poi is it the same file ?

What I found great between my 920 and the garmin of my friend , is the number of POI.

And for the other fonctions , the 730 got them all : text voice ( the gps say the name of the road ) and all other specific fonction ?

If I have to wait for a year, I would go for the 730 but if only wait for a month, I definitely get the 930.

The NA map coming with the 930 is larger than that on the 730 and the poi files are much larger as well.

As mVL states, i would never give away my 920 for the 730. You have a tremendous amount of more POI;s plus enhanced positioning, not to mention the extra space. What I did was put the european maps on a SD card since I very rarely use it and it gives me alot more space to add extras like poi's and fun things I like

Ok thanks alot, so I will wait for a 930 or highger model , and change it only if my problem become really annoying.

They should be. I haven't seen anyone report a difference.

And for the poi is it the same file ?
9xx has better POIs, as noted by many

And for the other fonctions , the 730 got them all : text voice ( the gps say the name of the road ) and all other specific fonction ?
every function is identical except for EPT (the 920 uses an accelerometer to guess speed/direction when it loses a GPS signal, 730 doesn't)
