I have a GO 740 Live and would like to buy additional external memory. Has anyone tried using a micro SDHC memory card rather the the micro SD?

I've already contacted TomTom support and received the following..."We recommend using a 4GB SD (Secure Digital) card (not SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) card) with the TomTom device."

I can't find any branded 4GB cards. I was thinking of a 8GB micro SDHC class 6?

Has anyone tried a micro SDHC card in the 740?

The larger capacity SDHC cards certainly do work in the x40 and x50 products, I have used a 16GB SDHC Class 6 card in the 940 and the 950, looks like TT CS is putting out crap advice again - Mike

Good choice ref the Class 6, and yes, in that order. Like Mike says, CS is full of baloney (with your choice of condiments) about 50% of the time.

8GB may be a little overkill, though. Most of us that aren't on models that do MP3 music just take our map folders and keep those on the SDHC card, freeing up the internal memory for whatever else (voices, etc.). You'll find 4GB is more than adequate to manage your map folder, even if you load it up with lots of custom POI files, etc.

Even if you decide to throw the whole Western Europe map along with North America, you'll still fit well within 4GB. My N.A. map folder is presently at 1.66GB with a few really big POI files & etc. My full W. European map is close to that size, so I've still got some room to spare.

Thanks for the info mikealder and canderson!!!

I'm off to buy a micro SDHC class 6. Not sure yet on a 8GB or 16GB. Will revert and let the forum know how it worked out.

So, I finally decided to purchase the Samsung Plus 8GB SDHC class 6 micro memory card and IT WORKS!!!

I’ve moved all my files (Canada and USA) from the internal drive on the TT GO 740 Live to the external drive (Samsung Plus 8GB SDHC micro) and in addition, purchased Western Europe and also saved it to my external drive. And yes, I made a full backup on my laptop.

The true experts are mikealder and canderson and You should work for TT! Thanks for the advice.

Don’t rely on the incompetent customer service staff at TT for advice.

One recommendation:

Tomtom's are very write-happy on flash memory, and tend to wear the memory out after 2-3 years. If you have the app and/or map on the internal, it can wear out over time.

To prolong the life of your 740, I recommend moving absolutely everything to the SD card, and let the internal stay empty.

After a few years, the Tomtom will wear out the SD, and you can just replace the SD and the 740 will be as good as new. I run both my 740 and 930 that way.

I've had maps on SD cards since early in my 920 days, particularly when I was doing things I shouldn't with them. Knowing your activity here in the forums, I'll take it that by everything you mean absolutely everything - maps, software, settings; just grab all the files, move them, and you're done? (after a backup, of course)

I know the software will run from the SD card (I had to do it to work around changes they made to the keyboard one time), but it never occurred to me that the internal memory could be empty.

This is a great tip - I can't believe I've never seen it before.

I tried this and traffic wouldn't work reliably - yellow triangle in the traffic bar on the map screen, and periodic 1506 error. Traffic sometimes appeared on in the map browser, but the yellow triangle remained.

I did notice afterward that there was an "internal.dat" file on the internal memory, despite having cleared all of the files.

Are there any other steps to getting this to work besides moving the files? Like a factory reset?

After moving everything but the maps back to the internal memory, I still have the same problem. Given TomTom's occasional server outages and other odd behavior, I'm wondering if the problems are just coincidental.

I haven't been getting the 1506 error. The "internal.dat" file is always created, so that's normal.

Did you try a chkdsk /f on the external drive?

If you have internal.dat on the external drive, you can try deleting it to see if it helps things (I doubt it).

Whenever I downgrade to 8.371 and then re-up to 9.058, I've always had to do a master reset. I don't know if that's unique to running things on the SD.

My guess is that the issue is a coincidence, but you never know. App 9.x is a lot less reliable with traffic than 8.x is.

Thanks for the input. After I got in the car this morning I realized that last time I had this problem with 8.x I was able to correct it by using "Operate My Go" in Home to setup the account name and password. After I got home I re-copied everything back to the SD card and used "Operate My Go" again and all is well.

Another strange thing appears to have happened too - my expiration dates are all the same (hasn't been that way since June) and the extra entries for "LIVE Services" are now gone. Now the only services listed under LIVE Services are:

TomTom Traffic
TomTom Safety Cameras
Fuel Prices USA
Local Search with Google
Weather
TomTom Buddies
QuickGPSfix

I just checked and all my silly expiration date entries are cleaned up too.

Maybe Tomtom finally got around to fixing all the renewal issues.

When I posted my renewal question the other day, all of mine were set to 11/30 ... but that's still from the free trial. Will be interesting to see what they say in a few weeks when I do the update. Of some interest, I first made the connection on 8/24. Guess I get an extra week.

I've seen the yellow triangle the past couple of days, but it goes away quickly. Next time I see it I'll tap it to see if it's error 1506.

Live Services Displayed TT740TM Live

Interestingly enough, until I read this item about all displayed dates for Live Services Subscription now being the same, I did not check to see what mine were.

Other than this AM docking my TT and updating it -- I did nothing. And sure enough all of mine now show the correct date. As we all told TT-CS months ago, it was a problem at their end not in firmware installed in multiple devices.

Also, my monthly subscription to TT Live is working without error. My current dates all show 12/27/2010, as expected.
